Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson
|
I have never done anything that would qualify as domestic violence. However, I have done horrible things. Mine didn't get caught on video or result in criminal charges. If so, my name might be as vilified as Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson.
Let me be clear. I am not excusing or defending the actions of Ray Rice or Adrian Peterson or Eric Tooley.
I am saying that I need God's grace just as much as Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson and Michael.
Michael's wife asked where he had been. His answer was different than the one he told her on the phone an hour earlier. He was caught. Michael had been with a prostitute. In the next 48 hours, his wife would discover Michael's hidden life of prostitutes, strip clubs, and alcohol abuse during the three years of their marriage.
How do you feel about Michael now?
Before he was married, Michael was a youth minister. He also had a secret life of pornography, massage parlors, one-night-stands, prostitutes, and going in to debt paying for high-end "escort" services.
How do you feel about Michael now?
He was in therapy for two years with a Christian counselor and made real progress. It was during this time that he got married. In his second year of marriage, he watched an R-rated movie with nudity and sexuality. He quickly and fully relapsed into his earlier sexual indulgences.
It was during those two years of therapy that he dealt with his childhood pain. At the age of four, his uncle would sell Michael as a prostitute and create child pornography from him. This abuse continued into his teens and defined sexuality in his life.
How do you feel about Michael now?
Fortunately, Michael's wife stuck with him. She went through tough years of healing and therapy for both of them. Today they have been married 21 years. They work full time together speaking and counseling in a ministry they founded for Christian leaders who are experiencing sexual, relational, and ministry brokenness.
How do you feel about Michael now?
How did Jesus feel about the woman caught in adultery? John 8:3-11: "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."
I will speak out against the evils of domestic violence and pornography. I will depend on my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for my identity and new name. I pray the story can be the same for Eric Tooley and Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson that it was for Michael.
