Children's Exposure to Pornography - The Response
|
This is the third of a three-part series covering the findings of a major British Government study that synthesizes the key findings of pornography research as a whole.
The first week, I reported on the study's report of the scope of the problem.
Last week I summarized the study's findings of the result of this exposure.
This week my focus is on the study's recommendations for a public policy response to the problem of our children's exposure to pornography.
1. All schools understand the importance of, and deliver, effective relationship and sex education which must include safe use of the internet.
2. Curriculum on relationships and sex education covers pornography, and sexual practices that are relevant to young people's lives and experiences, as a means of building young people's resilience.
3. Rename 'sex and relationships education' (SRE) to 'relationships and sex education' (RSE) to place emphasis on the importance of developing healthy, positive, respectful relationships.
4. Embark on a national campaign to better inform parents, professionals and the public at large about the content of pornography and young people's exposure to such content. This should include a message to parents about their responsibilities affording both children and young people greater protection.
5. To better protect girls from gender-based violence, research safeguarding the implications of exposure to pornography on children, particularly in relation to teenage relationship abuse and peer exploitation.
6. The ongoing teen abuse campaign should reflect young people's exposure to violent sexualized imagery within their peer groups and relationships. (Horvath, M.
