Try this ten-question quiz to see how well you know the current teen use of social media. Then take the appropriate steps to guide your teen.

 

1.    What percentage of online teens use social media:  

95%, 90%, 80%, 72%?

2.       Who uses social media more:  

teens or adults under age 50?

3.       Which social media site do teenagers use most:  

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or YouTube?

4.       Since 2006, do teens post their email address and/or phone number on social media:  

more or less?

5.       What percentage of teens on Facebook are "friends" with their parents:  

70%, 52%, 33%, 5%?

6.       What percentage of teens of Facebook limit what their parents can see even if they are "friends:"  

70%, 52%, 33%, 5%?

7.       What percentage of teens on Facebook are "friends" with someone they haven't met in person:

8.       What percentage of online teens have been contacted by someone they did not know in a way that made them feel scared or uncomfortable:

Answers:

1.     80%.

2.       Online adults under age 50 are now just as likely as teens to use social media.

3.       Facebook and isn't even close. 81% to 7% for Twitter, 3% for Instagram, and 1% for YouTube.

4.       More! Email is almost twice as likely and phone number is almost ten times as likely.

5.       70%. This should be mandatory for a parent with a child on Facebook.

6.       5%. This is rare but should never be eliminated as a possibility.

7.       33%. Parents should monitor and delete unknown "friends" of their teens.

8.       17%. Have you taught your teen what to do if this happens?

9.       30%. Do you use filtering and accountability software?

10.   39%. This is very common to gain access to porn websites.
