Redefining Pornography
This month a major news outlet had this headline,
"Internet porn means birds 'n' bees talk comes earlier, says expert."

I was excited to see a headline with a point I had been saying for years.

The article began with
"A father recently sat down to have 'the talk' with his 10-year-old son. After he got through the basics on the birds and the bees, the boy asked, 'Why do men wear masks when they're having sex?'"

The article goes on to make some good points about how likely porn exposure is to our kids and how that can result in unhealthy sexuality. From there the article goes bad.

The "expert" defined as a "sex educator" is the CEO of a website where people post their home-made videos of themselves having sex!

As I fretted a culture that gets its sex education experts from owners of pornographic websites, I saw the bigger issue.

The expert said "keeping your kids from Internet porn is practically impossible" and "It doesn't matter what parental controls you put in place."

Her answer was to correct the sexual misconceptions that come from porn by showing real sex by real people. Because this wasn't professional porn stars but real people, these weren't videos showing pornography. They were videos showing "love."

Videos of love. Really?!

1 Corinthians 13 tells us that

"Love is kind. It ... does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking."

I respond by stealing a famous political quote, "I experienced love. I know love. Love is a friend of mine. Pornography, you're not love."

I believe as pornography gets ever more prevalent in our culture this redefining of pornography to remove its stigma will become more commonplace
