Super Bowl Commercials
The Super Bowl is one of the few remaining distinctively American events that unites us as a culture. A majority of us will participate in this event.

Last year the top four television episodes in viewership were the Super Bowl, the Super Bowl Pre-Kick show, the Super Bowl post-game show, and the Super Bowl Kick-Off show.

Next week we'll talk about the commercials, the half-time show, our Super Bowl parties, and a few of us might even talk about the football game.

The Super Bowl commercials are a teachable moment with our young people. Children and teens will want to talk about them. Take advantage of this moment to at least teach media discernment and at most your values.

Walt Mueller at the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding has developed "The Simple Seven" questions for processing the Super Bowl commercials:
  1. What product is this ad selling?
  2. What, besides the product, does this ad sell? (ideas, lifestyle, worldview, behaviors, etc.)
  3. What's the bait, hook, and promise?
  4. Complete this sentence: "This ad tells me, use_________ (the name of the product) and ____________ (the result the ad promises)."
  5. Does the ad tell the truth? What? How?
  6. Does the ad tell a lie(s)? What? How?
  7. How does this ad and its messages agree or disagree with God's truth and what does that mean for me?

He has twenty-one more questions if you want to go deeper. Walt also has a way for youth workers to use these questions in a youth event.

All of this is available in his one page, "CPYU's Ad Filtering Questions for Super Bowl XLVII."

I talk a lot about taking advantage of teachable moments. It is not often we know one is coming in advance. Let's be ready!

This week Eric is speaking at the Association of Christian Schools International (ASCI) regional conference in Galveston. Over 800 Christian school teachers from Texas, Louisiana, and other states come together for this three day conference.

In addition to an information booth, Eric is presenting,

  • "Pornography Proof Your Students," and
  • "You Can Learn A Lot About Sex From Play-doh."

By attending Eric's presentations, Christian schools qualify for a 20% on having Eric speak at their school.
