Greetings!

Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity has hit the ground running in 2016!  We started the new year off right, breaking ground on our our 18th and 19th homes in Salida on January 8th. We have two new members to our Board of Directors, Charlie Chupp and Chris Reitter. And the ReStore is continuing discounts for seniors and military personnel every Friday.

On behalf of the Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity staff, I would like to thank all of our volunteers for their continued support of the Habitat mission. Without our dedicated volunteers we cannot build affordable housing in Chaffee County. Whether you are volunteering your time, talent or resources, it does make a difference in the lives of the families we serve.

Family Introductions - The Marinuccis
Single mom of two excited to raise family in Salida

Gina Marinucci is a single mom of two
boys Domenico, 15, and Dante, 14. She has been a massage therapist for 11 years and is also employed at Currents Restaurant in Salida.

She moved to Salida to raise her boys in a small town similar to the one in which she was raised in Ohio. Her fondest childhood memory is riding her bike for hours exploring.

Domenico is a drummer, artist and mountain biker. Dante is very musical and loves video games.

The family loves Salida and enjoy going to mountains, swimming, hiking, biking and being outdoors.

Gina and her family are thrilled with the opportunity to own a home in Salida which has turned out to be a wonderful place to live.
March Volunteers - Ron Southard
Ron is proud of his partnership and work with Habitat

Ron Southard

Hometown: New Hartford, Iowa

Education: Iowa State University, two majors- Architectural Engineering and Construction Engineering

Ron moved to Buena Vista in 1975 from Garden City, Kansas. His goal had been to start a construction company with a college friend and between them they thought Central Colorado had business potential and they started their own company, Avery Structures.

By 1979, the name was changed to "ASI". The company worked at Climax, the Twin Lakes Power Plant and the Homestake Tunnel for many years as well as other heavy engineering projects around Colorado and surrounding states.

Ron owns the building, that the ReStore is a part of, across from the airport in Buena Vista. Part of the present structure was built in the early 80's and additions were added in the mid and late 80's. There have been various businesses in the building - Perry Mechanical, ASI Power Technology, Watson Heirlooms, Keeper Enterprises and Architonic Design Group, among others.

In 2004-5, Ron acquired, preserved and relocated a vintage furniture shop, the Moser Furniture Company of Lynchburg, Virginia into the building. The shop is a living museum and classroom.

Ron is a visionary.....he became acquainted with the concept of "Community Development" which is an education-centric commercial/industrial environment. This concept involves college campuses surrounded by transportation, business and industry to achieve education and work place synergy. This idea became a reality via the property he has been instrumental in developing into "Colorado Center", a commercial /Industrial Park (Colorado Center), airport (Central Colorado Regional Airport) and he donated 35 acres to Colorado Mountain College.

Ron first became involved with Habitat for Humanity when he met Kim Brenner, Executive Director, and Gerry Dixon, ReStore Manager. Habitat was looking for another facility for the ReStore from its location on Tabor St. Ron and Gerry saw the location on Gregg Drive and the showroom in the building as a good fit for the ReStore. Kim Brenner and Dale Shoemaker, Board President, went to Ron to sign the original lease. Ron looked at the two of them and said, "My hope is to see Chaffee County Habitat become so successful that Habitat would purchase this building." Dale and Kim smiled at each other and walked away thinking that buying the building would be great, but a lot had to happen before that could happen. Well, a lot has happened- Ron's vision was correct!!

Ron is proud of his partnership with Habitat and this has been a highlight in his and his wife's life. He has seen the success of Habitat and he believes in the mission of Habitat. Ron has enjoyed all his experiences with Habitat volunteers, staff and board members.

Hobbies: Creating art, companies, developments and concepts!

Memorial and Honorary Gifts

If you have a family member or friend whose life has been touched by Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity, we hope you'll consider making a gift to us in honor of that person. Providing a gift establishes a living tribute that allows you to:
  • Honor a loved one or yourself
  • Support our continuing efforts
  • Receive personal financial benefits from your contribution.

Giving Now or Later

Any charitable gift you arrange can be made in honor of someone. Consider these two basic methods of establishing an honorary gift. Please consult with your financial advisor or attorney to see if this is the right planned giving path for you.

A gift today-An outright gift can help fund our immediate needs or an upcoming project. The financial benefits can include an income tax deduction and possible elimination of capital gains tax.

A gift through your will or living trust-You can include a bequest in your will or living trust stating that a specific asset, certain dollar amount or-more commonly-a percentage of your estate will pass to Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity at your death in honor of your loved one.
No matter which basic method you choose, you have the ability to endow your gift so that it lasts forever. Endowments are structured so that you designate the purpose of your gift. Your gift is invested with and becomes part of our endowment and a distribution is made each year. Because the principal remains intact, the fund will support our mission in perpetuity.

Making an honorary gift is a wonderful way to acknowledge someone's vision for the future. Depending on the nature of your gift, there are a variety of ways we can recognize your generosity.
You are encouraged to contact your financial advisor or attorney to see which planned giving path is right for you.
