Greetings!

On behalf of the Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity staff, I would like to thank all of our volunteers for their continued support of the Habitat mission.

We cannot build affordable housing in Chaffee County without you! Whether you are volunteering your time, talent or resources, it does make a difference in the lives of the families we serve.

Chaffee Habitat dedicated Mabey Home
An excited family took possession August 27th

The house located, at 12872D County Road 314B in Johnson Village, officially became the home of Tim, Amanda, Edwin and Shelly Mabey on Thursday, August 27, 2015. This was a day that the family will never forget! The afternoon commenced with great anticipation, as well as overwhelming excitement, for the family, sponsors, volunteers and the Chaffee County Habitat staff. The Dedication Ceremony is a time for all to gather together to celebrate the newly completed home.

During the Dedication, there was a short program in which the family, sponsors, site supervisor and those involved in the homebuilding process shared memories and gratitude for all the support and work involved in building this home. Prayers were shared and the family was presented a bible to have in their home. To close the Dedication Ceremony, the Mabey's were given keys to their new residence. The family was thrilled with the prospect of showing off the home that everyone had worked so hard to complete. Following the program, we all enjoyed time socializing, snacking and touring the home.

Not only did the Mabey family have the opportunity to enjoy the celebration on August 27th, they also experienced a second Dedication Ceremony on September 3rd with the Buena Vista Correctional Complex Staff, Instructor (Chris Fisher) and the students from the Construction Education program at the facility. This was an emotional celebration for all in attendance. Amanda Mabey provided heartfelt words of gratitude, as well as inspiration to the students. The students from the BVCC Construction Education program spent many hours working side-by-side with the family and all of the volunteers with a common goal of completing the construction of this home. Students in this program have the opportunity to learn construction skills while working towards positive personal and group achievements within the local community. We are continuously grateful for this program and all of its participants.

Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity would like to extend our sincere appreciation to everyone that assisted in making this dream become a reality!

If you or someone you know is interested in assisting Habitat for Humanity with future projects or in our local Restore, please contact us 719-395-0482. We look forward to meeting you!
Lois Hansen retires from Board of Directors
After ten years, Hanson plans to spend time with family

In 2005, Lois Hansen joined the Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors. Jim Culbertson recruited Lois from the Lutheran Church. She was a representative with Thrivent and helped build two Habitat homes with Thrivent funding. Lois's other activities with Habitat included working at the ReStore, building the homes, cooking meals and keeping track of work hours on the build site.

Lois was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Her parents moved to Buena Vista in 1957 so her father could work at the Climax Mine. In 1987 Lois married Andy Hansen and they were married for 27 years. They raised three children and now she is the proud grandmother to fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Lois has driven a school bus for the Buena Vista School District for 23 years and plans to retire in 2017. She drove the same bus route for eighteen years and knew all the children on her bus and watched them grow up into adults.

Lois's daughter-in-law and her three daughters applied for a Habitat home and were accepted into the program. Lois and her father helped with the sweat equity hours on the house. She encourages young people in the community who need a home to go to Habitat and apply. Lois advises them to start saving their money and prepare for a monthly mortgage. "I love what Habitat has done for this community."

Now Lois travels in her spare time to see her grandchildren and her father in Mancos, CO. The Habitat Board will miss Lois and wish her the best.
Support Habitat's Women Build program
A great way to give back to your community and no experience needed

What is Habitat for Humanity's Women Build? The Women Build is a
Habitat for Humanity program for women who want to learn construction skills and build homes and communities. This program brings together women from all walks of life to address the housing crisis facing millions of women and children worldwide. No experience is necessary!

During the Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity's 2015 Women Build we worked at the fourth duplex located on County Road 314B (Lot D) in
Johnson Village (behind the VFW), as well as the home on Ruby Mountain Lane in Nathrop. The group spent the two days working on the interior painting and trim portion of the projects. The ladies had a great time, learned some new construction skills and made a significant contribution towards affordable housing in Chaffee County. Domino's generously donated pizzas on Friday and the Valley Fellowship Church delivered savory pulled pork sandwiches with an assortment of side dishes. Each volunteer received a 2015 Women's Build T-Shirt.

Would you like to be part of this exciting, life-changing opportunity?
