Greetings!

On behalf of the Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity staff, I would like to thank all of our volunteers for their continued support of the Habitat mission.

We cannot build affordable housing in Chaffee County without you! Whether you are volunteering your time, talent or resources, it does make a difference in the lives of the families we serve.

Celebrating our volunteers

Sixty-five show up to celebrate Habitat for Humanity volunteers

On March 12, 2015, we celebrated all of our wonderful volunteers at our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Night.

There was a spread of delicious food, lots of door prizes, and background music generously donated by Mr. David Tipton.

Approximately 65 volunteers, Habitat staff members and current and past Habitat families were present.

Everyone who came received a goodie bag with a magnet drawn and designed by a Habitat family, an up-cycled wooden coaster made out of wood flooring from the ReStore, a $5 ReStore gift card and several other small tokens of appreciation.

We truly hope everyone who came out had a wonderful time and if you couldn't make it this year, we hope to see you next year!

Special thanks to Andrea Kinnell for all her work on the Volunteer Appreciation Night

Habitat lines up interns for this summer

Internship program lines up interns from Texas and North Carolina

Our Internship Program is progressing nicely! We have hired three interns so far; Daniel Arburto from El Paso, TX, Erin Bissette from Chapel Hill, NC and Joshua Garza from Austin, TX. They will be arriving in late May or early June and are excited for this opportunity. Watch the newsletter in the coming months for a more complete bio on each intern.

A big thank you to Bowie and Helen Duncan

A very special thank you for your help with the intern program

A very special thanks to Bowie and Helen Duncan for their generous support of our internship program! They are now in their fourth summer of providing housing for the interns at a great little cabin on their property. The experience has been amazing for our interns and they all have nothing but wonderful things to say about their stay in Colorado. We would not be able to have an internship program without Bowie and Helen's generous donation of living quarters for our interns. Many thanks, Bowie and Helen!

Construction Update - Blitz Build

Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity starts Blitz Build in Nathrop

CCHfH is participating in an established Habitat for Humanity program for the first time. We are partnering with the local professional building community to create affordable homeownership for a low income family.

The home will be located at 11450 Ruby Mountain Lane in Nathrop. Diesslin Structures Inc. (DSI) has stepped up to organize and lead the effort to build a home in two weeks beginning June 5th and will have it ready to move into June 19th. During this timeframe DSI along with numerous subcontractors will take the home from the subfloor to finished product. The subcontractors will be highlighted in future articles.

In 2002, Habitat for Humanity of Wake County (Raleigh, North Carolina) and local custom home builder Tom Gipson partnered to recruit 12 professional homebuilders to build one home each in a five-day period, donating as much of the materials as possible. This program has grown and to date, more than 1300 homes have been constructed under the Home Builders Blitz model.

How it works: Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat recruits local professional builders to partner with Habitat and coordinate the project through completion. Habitat for Humanity acquires land, develops the sites and provides house plans and permits. The builders provide donated labor and materials and help with fundraising. Habitat selects homebuyers based on its family selection criteria.

CCHfH believes housing provides a critical foundation for breaking the cycle of poverty. This event offers our professional homebuilder community the opportunity to use their skill and talents to address the growing need for low-income housing in Chaffee County. If you would like to participate by supplying materials, donating food, volunteering or lead a blitz build in the future please call the Habitat office at 395-0446.
