Greetings!

Habitat for Humanity volunteers are busy preparing for the 2015 builds in Johnson Village and Nathrop. Volunteers are needed on the build site, in the office and ReStore, to help with the coordination of meals and special events for 2015. If any of these tasks sounds fun, please call us to talk about pitching in.

Thank you to everyone who has already made  a commitment.

After the Move-In

Catching up with this year's new home recipients

We had the opportunity to sit down earlier this week with Dawn LeBeau and her daughters and Cerecia Meyer and Anthony and talk to them about their recent moves and how they were adjusting in their new homes.

Anthony was very excited about his new room, and loved talking about it. He was excited about living in his new house with his mom and cat, and liked being close to his friends.

Cerecia was also very happy about the new place, and they are both working hard to keep the house up.

"We're very happy with our new home," Cerecia said. "Anthony has been working hard to do his chores and follow the new rules, to keep everything clean. I love this neighborhood and the size of our house; it's great."

When asked what was their biggest challenge, Anthony said it was keeping his room clean and Cerecia said it was hanging the new curtains.

They also had great words of wisdom for anyone interested in being a new Habitat family.

"Treasure the people that contribute to Habitat, those who teach the classes, the coaches, the construction workers, all the volunteers," said Cerecia.

"Do your best, work hard to keep the house clean and never forget where you live when you go away to college," said Anthony.

Dawn said she and the girls were excited to have their own rooms, although Dawn said the girls don't always end up sleeping in their own beds.

They said their biggest challenge was unpacking.

"We are still unpacking," Dawn said. "We are also getting accustomed to the different bills. We have new bills here, so we have needed to change our finances up a little bit."

Dawn said that if she had anything to say to someone who was interested in becoming a Habitat family, that "it's not always easy, but it's worth it."

Volunteer Spotlight: Shirley Howe

Learning more about the community and how giving the people are.

Name: Shirley Howe

Hometown: I was rased in a very small rural community in Idaho that was filled with farm land and orchards. We raised all our food so growing up taught me the value of hard work and the joy of sharing.

Career: For 33 years I had a successful painting and wallpapering company. I started in Texas and had 2 years contracting in California. Working on the habitat houses seems like an extension of that.

Inspiration for helping others: I can't say I have an inspiration for helping others, it should be natural for all of us. Helping others helps me in so many ways. An inspiration to me is to see the inmates on the job trying so hard to improve their lives while helping someone else. The program has to be a win/win for all!

Hobbies: My favorite hobby is gardening, but a close second is finding ways to make old things useful; what I call recycling.

Construction Update

Work begins on the Johnson Village project

Chaffee Habitat construction team has gotten an early start on our 2015 build that is occurring in Johnson Village. This year we are building the fourth and final home (Unit D) on the first parcel of land donated to us. The first home was completed in 2011 (Unit C) and the next two in 2012 (Units A & B). Christina Brandenburg Architect PC form Buena Vista donated the architectural services for Unit D. These four homes share a common driveway off County Road 314B and water well.

We broke ground on Unit D Friday 23 January. Dennis Giese Excavation worked hard all day and completed the task on one day. We are changing to year round construction in an effort to more effectively utilize the volunteers and professional support available in our community. Over the next week a dedicated group of volunteers organized the site for construction and then completed the footers. Work is progressing on the stem walls and back filling. The work schedule is variable depending on the weather and volunteer availability. If you would like to get involved please call the office and the construction team will get back with you.

In the next newsletter update the construction team will discuss another first for us which will be occurring at our Ruby Mountain Lane build site in Nathrop.
