Having a peaceful place to sleep is a luxury that most of us take for granted. But for a staggering 1000 families in Chaffee County, many sleep in cold, damp or unsafe conditions.
Due to the compassion and generosity of our community many families now sleep peacefully, but there are so many more that need our help.
Please help us partner with more local families. Together we can build decent and affordable housing where families feel safe and their dreams become reality.
"Your generous contribution and continued support of the community gives hope to families who are still in need of a safe, warm home. Thank you and may you have a Blessed Holiday Season with heavenly peace!"

Employee Spotlight: Harold Nelson
Harold loves dogs, tolerates people, helps out in the ReStore
Name: Harold Nelson
Home and Career: Born in the OLD Salida Hospital, where else since he's old. He's lived in Buena Vista all of his life.
Harold probably has a sign in his house that reads "Dogs Welcome, People Tolerated".
Harold has had a varied career but he's mostly proud of being able to stay one step ahead of the sheriff.
Work with Habitat / Reason for helping others: He's very cranky (remember the sign Dogs Welcome, People Tolerated?) and was looking for a job when he found this one, however, our customers REALLY like him and he's knows value of helping them with their needs. He enjoys working with volunteers at ReStore and learning the ropes from them.
Hobbies: Fast burros.

Volunteer Spotlight: Lee Schilling
Lee hopes to make a difference working with offender crew
Name: Lee W. Schilling
Home and Career: I have lived in Buena Vista since 2006, but have been trying to get here ever since I discovered it in 1972. Our family vacation, when I was 12, was a camping trip to Colorado. That is all it took for the ever lasting impression. When it was time to go to college, of course CSU was the number one choice and the dream came true. I did work construction during those years in Ft. Collins and that is when I realized how much I enjoyed the rewards from that work. Seeing your daily accomplishments is uplifting. I spent a career in technical industrial sales. I covered both domestic and international sales for hydraulic seals and nonmetallic bearings. My specific market was OEM's of off road construction equipment including companies such as Komatsu and Volvo. I flew every week, so in 2006 my company agreed to let me move up here and I made that weekly drive to DIA from BV. My retirement in 2013 ended that chapter. I have seen everything that South Park can dish out, man I have the stories.
I grew up in South Jersey just outside of Philadelphia. Actually that is a great area of the country due to the proximity to some major metro areas plus the Jersey shore. The company that I worked for was Philadelphia based, so that kept me in that part of the country. During those years I really enjoyed our summer home in Cape May and the ocean fishing that was so exciting.
It was time though to get back here to enjoy everything this state has to offer. During the past few years I met Carolyn Beeson and in May of this year we got married. She has recently retired from The Heart of the Rockies. Now we need to find the time in our retirement to burn up all those airline miles.
Work with Habitat: I got involved with Habitat on the build last year on Crestone Avenue. Again finding construction work very rewarding. I guess I'm the Alpha Omega man. I come in on the project in the beginning with getting the foundation in, then showing up at the end to do the finish work. Also, seeing the joy on the faces of the families purchasing these homes is heart warming.
Reason for helping others: Besides being able to help some families and giving back to the community there has been another aspect of Habitat that emerged for me. Working with the offender crew from the correctional facility in BV has been unreal. These men seem ready to get themselves straightened out and have been very anxious to do whatever is required of them. Most don't even know how to read a tape measure, but it doesn't take long for them to learn that and other construction skills. It's great teaching and working side by side with them. Hopefully we can make a positive influence in their lives.
Hobbies: What can I tell you........ fishing, camping, hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and everything outdoors.

Some thoughts during this Holiday Season
Newsletter editor quits hiding behind keyboard and speaks out
Well, it's that time of year again. The Christmas ads seemed to start about the same time the election ads finished. It seems as though we are being constantly bombarded with advertisements, whether through our televisions, radios, newspapers, magazines or web browsers, not to mention the stuff that we see everyday. Heck, they are even putting ads at the beginning of movies now. Are we turing into a "I want, I want, I want..." kind of society, only worried about ourselves. Some are, I'm sure, but I've had the pleasure to work with people who are more then willing to help out their fellow man; the volunteers at Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity. And like the Hall and LaBeau families, I'm grateful to be working with them. It was such a joy to see everyone who came out for the house dedications last month. Gratitude can be a funny thing. It can be tough both ways, gratitude in accepting and gratitude in giving. I know someone who is a wonderful giver. They are always the first to grab the check when we go out to dinner, or pitch in with time or money on a project. But they have trouble accepting with gratitude. They don't like to let you take a turn picking up the check, or even pitching in. When you pray, do you only ask, or do you thank with gratitude as well? Are you open to gifts that God and others have to give to you, or is it hard to accept help? "Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts." (Colossians 3:16) So I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me out this year with the news letter, with stories, photos and videos. A special thanks to our intern Theresa Graham, who covered the August Newsletter for me while I was on vacation. Thanks to everyone! Except for my minions - you get nothing! |
