Greetings!

Welcome to the New Year!

Habitat for Humanity volunteers are busy planning the next season of building affordable housing in Chaffee County. The building permits are in-hand for the duplex to be built next to last year's duplex on Crestone Avenue. This will be the 14th & 15th homes Chaffee County volunteers construct alongside local families.

Volunteers are still needed to coordinate meals, snacks, build days, volunteering and special events for this summer. If one of these tasks sounds fun or you have another idea, please call us to talk about pitching in.

Thank you to everyone who has already made a commitment.

Volunteer Close-ups
A closer look at some of our volunteers and why they help out

ReStore volunteers: Susan Lee (left) and Mary Schmitt (right) have been volunteering for over a year because, "the work here supports Habitat homes."

Mary and Susan say the reason they volunteer their time is, "It's a fun thing to do and especially if you like meeting the public."

ReStore volunteer, Austin Bushnell, works every Weds helping to sort hardware. Thank you, Austin!

The ReStore is seeking  volunteers to fill the  following positions: donation pick-ups, sorting items, cashiers, and providing assistance to customers in finding what they want in the ReStore.

Call Molly at 719-395-7585 for shift information and any questions.

Board Member Spotlight: Beth Cooper

Volunteer believes "nothing gets done by sitting on your hands."

Since joining the board of directors in 2013 Beth has regularly participated with board functions as well as family selection and strategic planning. Her dedication, generous spirit, and "I can do this" attitude are a great addition to our team. Welcome aboard Beth! ~ Kim Brenner

Although full-time residents for nearly six years, Beth and her husband,
Dan, have been property owners in the Arkansas Valley  for 20 years.  She moved west from the Philadelphia area and now is a partner in real estate with her husband, focusing on photography and media.  Over the years she has volunteered with several not-for-profit organizations, gaining satisfaction from helping others and contributing to various community organizations.  Now as a resident of Chaffee County, Beth is excited about giving her time and energy to Habitat for Humanity to help meet the need for adequate housing.

The Coopers love to travel and Beth, while a dedicated gardener back East, continues to be outdoors in this high desert territory, whether it be moving rocks, watering and pruning trees or moderate hiking.

Beth's other interests/activities include reading non-fiction, "sous-chefing" in the kitchen, playing grandma to five grandchildren,  and staying in touch with friends all over the world.

She feels it is important to become involved in one's community by reaching out, sharing your talents, financially supporting worthwhile projects, and encouraging friends to join in. As an anonymous philosopher once said, "Nothing gets done by sitting on your hands."

2014 Volunteer Appreciation Chili Cook-off
Habitat announces the date and location of this year's chili cook-off

This year's Chaffee County Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Appreciation Chili Cook-off will be March 13, 2014 at the Salida Community Center.

There will be door prizes and more, so start digging out your best chili recipe, because the competition will be tough.

We will have more detail in next month's newsletter.

This newsletter is dedicated to every volunteer, donor, and ReStore shopper. You are the reason families in this community realize transformed lives and homeownership. Thank you for believing in the mission that brings us together: Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.

Please keep us in your prayers as the community comes together to accomplish this transformational work.

Sincerely,
Kim Brenner
