Hall Co. Fire Services receives new marine rescue boat

A christening and dedication ceremony was held for Hall County Fire Services' new marine rescue boat on May 21 at Laurel Park.

The ceremony followed a "Summer of Safety" press conference jointly hosted by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Governor's Office of Highway Safety and the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

The Hall County Board of Commissioners voted to approve the purchase of the new vessel in March in order to have it in service in time for Lake Lanier's busy Memorial Day weekend. The 23-foot rescue boat is larger than the fire department's previous boat, allowing first responders better clearance for life saving efforts. It also is expected to have a significantly longer life span and will cost less to maintain.

"The new marine rescue boat will help save lives on Lake Lanier," Hall County Fire Chief Jeff Hood said. "We look forward to using this piece of equipment to serve visitors and citizens on the lake this summer and throughout the year."

Two members of Hall County Fire Services were recognized last month morning during the American Red Cross Northeast Georgia Chapter's Heroes Breakfast. Hall County Firefighter Colton Stroud was recognized with the Emergency Response Hero Award for his lifesaving efforts during a jet-ski accident while off duty. Meanwhile, Hall County Fire Lt. Chuck Jarrard was presented with the Community Hero Award for his quick response to a training incident last year.

"It is an honor to see Firefighter Stroud and Lt. Jarrard recognized publicly for their acts of courage," Hall County Fire Chief Jeff Hood said.  "I am proud to work alongside them and all of the other men and women of Hall County Fire Services who make a significant and positive impact on the lives of others every day."

The American Red Cross Northeast Georgia Chapter joins service areas nationwide in the signature event that recognizes and honors those who have performed heroic acts to help others in need.

Buy a brick to honor public safety personnel!

Buy a brick in support of the Community Public Safety Tribute planned for downtown Gainesville's Roosevelt Square.

The tribute is the result of a partnership between the Rotary Clubs of Gainesville, Hall County and South Hall who want to honor local public safety personnel. The tribute will be surrounded by bricks which can be purchased and marked with the names of current or former public safety personnel as well as community members who want to show their support for these men and women, who, through the choice of their profession, reflect the Rotary motto: "Service Above Self."  Read more here.

Property owners have until June 29 to appeal property valuation

The Hall County Tax Assessors office mailed Personal Property notices of current assessment on Friday, May 15. Personal property includes business and manufacturing equipment and inventory, boats and aircraft. As required by state law, this annual notice includes a written explanation of the value of taxable property and an estimate of the property tax bill.

The assessment notice is not a tax bill. The estimate of taxes on the notice is based on the current year's assessed value and the previous year's tax rate. The 2015 property tax rate will not be determined until it is approved by the various governing authorities, the County, schools and municipalities.

Property owners have 45 days from the date of the notice to file an appeal via U.S. mail or in person.  Read more here.

Couch, Schofield to be honored at School Resource Officer Conference

The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) will be hosting its annual NASRO National Conference in Orlando, Florida on July, 7.  During this conference, Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch and Hall County School Superintendent Will Schofield will be presented with the Regional Exceptional Service Award.

Regional Exceptional Service Awards are presented to individuals for their continuous and sustained service to the schools community and efforts that go above and beyond the normal school staff member or School Resource Officer.

Collaborative efforts between the Hall County Sheriff's Office and Hall County Schools have yielded the implementation of numerous school safety measures in Hall County Schools. Some of those include a Visitor Management System that provides a single secured point of entry into the schools with a photo I.D. taken to place on a visitor's pass as well as a secured login record. In addition, Operation Safe School has been put into effect, which requires patrol deputies to make the schools in their district a part of their routine patrol route. Finally, inclement weather plans are in place that allow patrol and School Resource Officers the ability to provide live reports to the new Hall County Schools app that feeds live information to administrators who then makes the decision to close or delay schools during inclement weather.
