Hall Co. Probate Court reminds residents about gun law changes
A new Georgia gun law went into effect July 1, making changes to the list of places where persons with carry permits can carry their weapons. Also, as a part of the new law, a plea of no contest is no longer treated as a conviction, and 18-20 year olds who are active military can apply for a weapons carry lisence. In addition, residents who have a current Georgia Weapons Carry License issued by Hall County can renew the license as long as it hasn't been expired for more than 30 days. Those seeking to renew their carry license will not have to be fingerprinted, so they can deliver their consent to a background check to the Sheriff's Office in the Hall County Courthouse rather than the Hall County Law Enforcement Center. Anyone with further questions or concerns is asked to contact the offices of the Hall County Probate Court at 770-531-6921.

News from the Hall County Tax Commissioner
 |
Darla Eden |
Watercraft/Personal Property Taxes: The Hall County Tax Commissioner's Office has launched a renewed effort to collect unpaid taxes on watercraft and personal property in the County.
"We are confident that these efforts, which started at the beginning of summer, are producing a positive result because our delinquent accounts are lower than this time last year," said Hall County Tax Commissioner Darla Eden. Read more here.
Labor Day Office Closing: In compliance with Hall County Government's scheduled holiday closings, the Tax/Tag office will be closed on Monday, Sept. 1. For motor vehicle renewals, we encourage our taxpayers with upcoming September birthdays to take into consideration the countywide closing to avoid possible late fees, fines or penalties due to lapsed registration. For delinquent property tax, we strongly encourage our taxpayers who are under levy and scheduled for the Sept. 2 tax sale to remit payment in full by 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29. As a reminder, payments for property under levy must be made in cash or by money order, certified funds or bank/credit card. Personal checks are not accepted.
Best time of day at the Tax Commissioner's Office: The Hall County Tax Commissioner's Office reports that their least busiest time of day is in the morning, so if taxpayers are looking for minimal lines and quicker service, they are encouraged to make their trip to the office between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. As a reminder, the Hall County Tax Commissioner's Office is located on the first floor of the Hall County Government Center, 2875 Browns Bridge Road in Gainesville.
Changes in Georgia's driver's licensing process: As a result of the enactment on July 1, 2014 of Senate Bill 298, drivers who renew, replace, change their address, or reinstate their driver's license using the Department of Driver Services (DDS) Online Services via https://online.dds.ga.gov/onlineservices/Account/Login.aspx will now be able to use their DDS Online Services receipt as proof of valid driving privileges in accordance with O.C.G.A. 40-5-29 up to 45 days or until their permanent license or permit arrives in the mail. It typically takes ten days for a license to be received once an online transaction is complete. The receipt does not include a photo and indicates that it cannot be used for identification purposes.

Hall Co. Sheriff's Office warns about electric bill scam
Officials with the Hall County Sheriff's Office are warning residents about another phone scam involving callers who claim to be employed by Georgia Power.
From the onset of 2013, Georgia Power advised that their company had fielded more than 650 calls of suspected billing scams before the end of last summer. Just this past week, the Hall County Sheriff's Office received reports of the scam recirculating in the area. Thus far, only a handful of such instances have been reported this summer. The callers seem to be targeting residents and businesses, stating that their electricity is about to be cut off unless the resident pays the past due amount on their utility bills. The victim is then instructed to purchase a prepaid debit card and provide the caller with his or her account number. Once the requested number(s) are given, the victim's money is taken and the scammer moves on to the next victim.
Georgia Power also stated that there had been some individuals going door-to-door, claiming to be business representatives of the company, asking for payment from residents. Contrarily, Georgia Power advises that the only representatives that would come to a customer's home would be their technicians. These utility workers will be in uniform, bearing the company ID badge. They also explained that they do not call their customers to speak directly and ask them for a payment via phone. Customers may receive an automated, pre-recorded message asking them to call Georgia Power to discuss their accounts.
If you believe that you have fallen victim to a utility phone scam, please call the Hall County Sheriff's Office for more information. Hall County's Community Service Office will be glad to help by answering your questions during normal business hours at (770)531-6900. You can also call the non-emergency dispatch line to have a deputy come out and make a report (770-536-8812).

Newly 'adopted' recycling bin bears new County logo
Another Hall County recycling can was given a new look recently thanks to Hall County Resource Recovery's ''Adopt-a-Can'' program.
The most recently painted bin features Hall County's new logo and slogan, "We have it all in Hall."
The "Adopt-a-Can" program allows groups to ''adopt'' roll-off recycling receptacles and paint them in order to increase awareness about recycling in the Hall County community.
The ''Adopt-a-Can'' program is a continuance of previous marketing efforts by Hall County in order to promote recycling. Two single-stream receivers at Hall County's compactor sites were painted pink last October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The receivers have rotated between Hall County's busiest compactor sites, promoting breast cancer awareness while also encouraging residents to protect the environment.
