HCSO introduces new jail courtroom

Pictured from left to right: State Court Judge Gene Roberts, Solicitor General Stephanie Woodard, Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch

Sheriff Gerald Couch held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Jan. 30 to showcase the new State Court jail courtroom, which was recently constructed inside the Hall County Jail.

"In the past, the courthouse encountered the dilemma of not having available courtrooms to hold court sessions," State Court Judge Gene Roberts said.  "This new jail courtroom will alleviate some of those issues."

The new jail courtroom also allows for public access to the jail court proceedings, reduces the number of inmates transported outside of the jail, adds an additional courtroom for use by the judges when courtrooms are sparse and provides an additional location to train Sheriff's Office employees on courtroom security and testimony.

"We are very excited about the future use of this courtroom," Couch said.  "This addition will significantly benefit both the Sheriff's Office and Court Administration."

Recent happenings at the Hall Co. Sheriff's Office

- On Jan. 17, deputies from the Hall County Sheriff's Office invited the public to join them for Coffee with a Cop at the Longstreet Café (#2) on Pearl Nix Parkway. The entire community was welcomed to come together at an informal, neutral space to talk about issues in their neighborhoods, foster relationships with deputies, and enjoy warm cups of coffee. -   Sheriff Gerald Couch has been visiting with Public Schools this month, meeting with principals and talking to teachers & students. At each stop, he reaffirms the Hall County Sheriff's Office mission and commitment to education. Staying in school and "making the grade" are a vital part of that message. In this photo album, Sheriff Couch is seen dropping in on the Peer Leadership class at Flowery Branch High School.

Pastor Jeff Benefield and volunteers hosted the event, which brought together various officers, troopers and deputies from Flowery Branch, Oakwood, Georgia State Patrol and the Hall County Sheriff's Office to start their shift on a positive note.

The new system, which went into effect on March 1, 2013, also requires another rate increase in 2015, raising the TAVT rate to 7 percent.  Read more here.

March 1, 2014 is the last day to pay property tax in full before incurring the 10 percent penalty for unpaid principle and includes the possibility of a FIFA Tax Lien charge. On March 2, the 10 percent penalty will be added to any unpaid principle amount. This penalty is added only once, but the 1 percent interest on unpaid principle continues monthly until property tax is paid in full.

What happens when an inmate finishes their sentence behind bars?  They're handed some clothes, $25 and a bus ticket.  While that may be adequate enough to get them home, some Hall County officials say it's not enough to reduce recidivism rates.  They're pushing for a new program for inmates--one they hope will keep them from ever returning to prison.  Find out more by watching this month's episode of Hall County Connection here.
