Public Works Department repairs washed out roads
c rogers
Crews install a new pipe on C. Rogers Road after the old one washed away during heavy rains on July 20.

The Hall County Public Works Department has had a busy spring and summer as recent rains wreaked havoc on area roadways.

Crews responded to C. Rogers Road in North Hall on Saturday, July 20 to find a portion of the roadway washed out due to the deluge.   Simpson Trucking & Grading, one of the County's emergency contractors, arrived on the scene.  They, along with Hall County crews, were able to reopen C. Rogers Road around 1:30 a.m. the following morning.  Members of the Hall County Fire and Sheriff's departments also responded to the scene to provide aid to residents on the dead end street.  No injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, Malibu Ridge, a roadway in South Hall that was washed out by heavy rains on May 19, has recently been repaired and is now open to traffic.  The road that suffered the most damage during the May 19th rains, Stephens Road, is still being repaired.  Hall County Public Works Director Ken Rearden said the project is expected to by completed by late August, weather permitting.

More than 1,100 citizens opt in to County's mass notification system
citizen's alert

More than 1,100 people have signed up for the Hall County Citizen's Alert System, which notifies residents in the case of severe weather, fires, floods, toxic environmental issues and in-process violent crimes.

The Hall County Citizen's Alert System was launched in February 2013. The system alerts residents through a variety of contact mechanisms, including cell phone, landline, email, text messaging, pager, and more, ensuring that important information is received within minutes.

Citizens listed in the AT&T white pages database have been automatically subscribed to receive alerts by landline. According to Hall County 9-1-1 Director Gail Lane, nearly 32,000 residents and approximately 8,000 businesses have been added to the system's database using the automatic subscription method.  Read more here.

Maurice Gregory, investigator with the Hall County District Attorney's Office, was named "Investigator of the Year" by the  District Attorney's Assocation at the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia's Summer Conference, held July 21-24 in Jekyll Island.  Gregory received the award for his work on the Christopher Ray case, which involved the kidnapping of a 10-year-old boy.

"He was an incredible support as we prepared for this difficult trial. He worked long hours with us on weekends and many late nights, happily and without complaint, to help us truly do justice. His technical know-how became apparent, and it was in part due to that smooth presentation of all our computer evidence that we were able to convict Mr. Ray and get a sentence of consecutive life sentences," wrote Gregory's colleagues in their letter nominating him for the honor.

Gregory has been employed with Hall County Government since 1987 and has served as an investigator in the District Attorney's Office since 1999.

Hall County Juvenile Court was awarded a $200,000 Juvenile Justice Incentive Grant from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.

The grant opportunity is part of Governor Nathan Deal's push to provide local communities with treatment resources to treat and rehabilitate delinquent youth.  Deal and the Georgia General Assembly appropriated $5 million during the 2013 legislative session for the purpose of creating effective community programs to serve youth who are currently being committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice and/or sent to short-term programs as a sanction.

The award is effective Aug. 1 through June 2014.
