Food Waste Reduction Project

The 8th grade class began leading the school in the Food Waste Reduction Project at OLP this week. The project began because we wanted to design and lead a project that would have a real positive impact on our school. We believe that reducing the amount of food waste we create at lunch will do just that.

Students will be encouraged to only take what they can eat and eat everything they take! We're asking students to think about three questions regarding anything they throw away at lunch:

  •          Can you eat it?
  •          Can it be recycled?
  •          Can it be brought home?

We are also encouraging students to use reusable food containers vs. plastic bags that are thrown away each day.

The eighth graders will be monitoring how much waste is created each day. The goal is to cut down food waste by ten percent every week.

Please help out by packing cold lunch in reusable containers and only pack what your kids can eat!

Thank you for your support!

Stuff the Stocking

During the season of Advent, we are again partnering with Nuestros Pequenos Heromanos, who care for abandoned and orphaned children in Central and South America (www.nph.org), to provide each child there with a Christmas stocking full of treats.

Here's how you can help:

 1. On November 29th, each family will be given a stocking shaped flyer describing the project.

 2. Purchase, make, or reuse a stocking about the size of the flyer. (For ease of packaging - the thinner - the better. Please no thick fur or embellishments. The stocking should lie flat).

3. Place your monetary contribution in an envelope and put it in the stocking.

  •       $1 buys a toothbrush
  •       $2 buys a toothbrush and a pair of socks
  •       $3 buys a toothbrush, pair of socks, and a toy
  •       $5 buys a toothbrush, pair of socks, a toy, and cookies & candy

4. Return the stocking to OLP by Dec. 7th with the flyer attached.

Thank you in advance for your support!

 Minnesotans in the Civil War

The Hennepin County Libraries are hosting seminars on Minnesotans in the Civil War.

'Minnesotans in the Civil War' Program Series
Minnesota was far from Civil War battlefields, but Minnesotans played significant roles in the fight against Confederate secession and slavery. In observance of the war's 150th anniversary, programs at eight libraries will feature authors, a reenactor, an archivist and a historian. More info.
