Morning Drop-off

Morning Drop Off in front of the school is becoming quite dangerous Parents, please have your child/ren cross at the corners with the patrols and not in the middle of the street when you are not dropping off on the school side of the street. Walking your child/ren across the middle of the street is not safe either and is not teaching students correct ways of safety in crossing. The teachers and I are very serious about keeping everyone safe and need your cooperation in this.

Students Voting

On Election Day the students of Our Lady of Peace participated in an election simulation created by the 8th graders. The simulation walked  students throughout the process similar to an actual polling place. The students had to get in lines according to their last name, sign by their name, receive a ballot, go to a ballot booth, insert their ballet into the box, and receive an, I VOTED! sticker.

I am happy to report that no child had to stand in line longer than 10 minutes. The students enjoyed the experience and the 8th graders showed great leadership and responsibility throughout the process

Prekindergarten also held elections, each student in the class voted for their favorite character from their favorite books! Ask your student who won!

Fundraisers

  Give to the Max

As you know, Our Lady of Peace is making a difference every day by providing a quality Catholic education for pre-school through 8th grade students.  Your generous support means the world to our students now more than ever. On November 15 Our Lady of Peace will be participating in Minnesota's Give to the Max Day.  By making a donation on Give to the Max Day, your $10, $25 or $100 gift could help us win an extra $1,000 for our work in the community.  The funds raised that day will go towards supporting arts and music at Our Lady of Peace.  To learn more please visit www.GiveMN.org and search for Church of Our Lady of Peace.

Target Red Card

REGISTER YOUR TARGET RED CARD & RAISE MONEY FOR OLP!!

Did you know that OLP School recently received a check for $3,965.57 from Target's Take Charge of Education initiative?  That's close to $4,000 raised for our school with very little work on our part! What's even more impressive is that OLP has received over $30,000 in funds from this Target program since we've been enrolled.

If you have a Target Red Card (credit or debit), go to www.target.com/redcard/tcoe to designate your card for OLP.  It's that simple! There is also a link on our school home page, www.olpmn.org.

 NaNoWriMo

November is National Novel Writing Month.  Each day students will begin class by writing (typing) for 10 minutes straight.  I will log their daily words counts.  Each class has a goal of 100,000 words for the combined number of words they write before midnight on November 30th, however, each student has set an individual goal as well.

Obviously the goal is output - to get your child writing - but in addition, I hope they realize how much they can write by dedicating only 10 minutes a day to writing.  If they choose to, students can also do additional writing at home. The students will save their novel to their Dropbox account, so it can be accessed and worked on at home as well as at school.

Some of the skills novel-writing builds: fluency, confidence, creativity and time management.

Though a novel may seem like a silly off-hours pursuit, many kids use their National Novel Writing Month participation as part of their high school and college application essay and list of accomplishments.

Plus, it's just loads of fun!

If you have any questions about National Novel Writing Month and your child or teen, please feel free to get in touch to check out the NaNoWriMo website: www.NaNoWriMo.org or contact me via email (eriehm@olpmn.org) or by phone 612-823-8253 (ext. 202).

Current Class Word Totals:

6th Grade: 36,744 words

7th Grade: 40,503 words

8th Grade: 67,873 words

This week's Word Wizards were:

Monday: Molly - 8th Grade (12,235 words)

Tuesday: Mackenzie - 8th Grade (1,612 words)

Wednesday: Chloe - 8th Grade (5,976 words)

Thursday: Dillon - 8th Grade (1,476 words)

Technology Update

In a galaxy not too far away ...
Actually, in your current galaxy the middle school students of OLP went through the second iPad update this last week!

As the program continues teachers and students are working with new programs and new applications in a variety of classes.

Check out the new Globe program that students' received for social studies or the connectivity between Pages and Dropbox (no more lost files)!

The teachers and administration also continue to monitor students use during classtime and conduct random iPad inspections ensuring that students are demonstrating responsible digital citizenship.

Stay tuned next month for: dun-dun ... the first iOS 6.0.1 update!

Whate'er I do, things great or small
Whate'er I do, things great or small
Whate'er I speak or frame.
Thy glory may I seek in all,
Do all in Jesus' name.

My Father, for His sake I pray.
Thy child accept and bless
And lead me by Thy grace to-day
In paths of righteousness. Amen.
