Peace Circles Students met this week for Peace Circles - watching a video about bullying and signing a pledge to be a peace building adding their positive energy in the form of paper suns to power the flower gardens built during the first Peace Circles. NaNoWriMo Did you know that sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students spend the month of November writing novels? That's right! Each year Our Lady of Peace Middle School students participate in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo for short). Each day during Language Arts, students spend the first 10 minutes of class writing. Word counts are tallied daily and each class tries to be the first to meet their goal of 100,000 words. In addition, students also vie for the title of "Word Wizard" - the person who writes the most words in one day! This year, students will have another exciting opportunity tied to NaNoWriMo. On Oct. 23rd, the 6th-8th graders will have the chance to meet a local author who wrote her recently published book during NaNoWriMo. Stephanie Watson, author of Elvis & Olive and Elvis & Olive: Super Detectives, will visit OLP and lead the students in a writing workshop. We are thrilled to be able to offer this amazing learning experience to our Middle School students! |
| Civics at OLP | | Every four years, Social Studies teachers are given the chance to make tangible so much of what we teach. With the responsibilities of meeting the numerous standards on an annual basis, the Presidential Election provides the opportunity to introduce, review and master a handful of the required Civic standards. Our 8th graders have been studying American History and focusing on the basis in which our country was founded. Beyond the freedom of speech and religion, the rights to a fair and speedy trial, and the other eight amendments in our Bill of Rights, we have had discussions on how fortunate we are to live in a country where all adult citizens have the opportunity and civic responsibility to vote. To simulate the process of electing our national leader, the 8th graders have assigned electoral votes to classrooms, registered students to vote, and created ballots and "I Voted" stickers to hand out on election day. This is the third time I have had the opportunity to incorporate such an important citizenship unit, and it is amazing how much these students have embraced the unit of study.
We wanted to share how we will embrace our learning and have the election process simulated on November 6. As a Catholic School and a non-for-profit corporation, we are also aware of our responsibility to avoid any perception that Our Lady of Peace endorses one particular candidate based on this voting process. With that responsibility in mind, we have decided that the students will not count or apply electoral votes to the classrooms, but rather they can apply this important learning experience to the actual Presidential Election results on November 6.
