DirectorDr. Chi Joins Staff as New
Census Data Center Director

The SDSU Sociology and Rural Studies Department is happy to announce t
he arrival of Dr. Guangqing Chi as our new Director for the SDSU Rural Life and Census Data Center. Dr. Chi officially took over duties as Director on June 23, 2014, after the retirement of previous Director, Dr. Mike McCurry.

Dr. Chi and his wife, Sunny, moved here with their three daughters from Mississippi where Chi was an Associate Professor of Sociology and a Research Scientist at the Social Science Research Center of Mississippi State University. Chi received his Ph.D. degree in Environmental Demography in 2006 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

His program of research seeks to examine the interactions between human population and the built and natural environment upon which we all depend. He has been pursuing this objective through three interwoven areas of research: transportation and demography, natural amenities and rural development, and population estimation and forecasting. The three areas of research build upon his methodological strengths in spatial analysis and statistics and spatial demography. In 2007, Dr. Chi received the Walter E. Terrie Award from the Southern Demographic Association for his development of spatial regression models for small-area population forecasting. Dr. Chi's research on gasoline prices and traffic safety has been highlighted more than 2,000 times by numerous domestic and international news media.

Dr. Chi's research has been supported through grants from both federal and state agencies. Much of his published work has appeared in internationally prestigious journals such as Demography, Landscape and Urban Planning, Journal of Transport Geography, Regional Studies, Urban Studies, Rural Sociology, Accident Analysis and Prevention, Annals of Regional Science, Growth and Change, and Population, Place, and Space. He looks forward to working with colleagues to serve the demographic needs of stakeholders in South Dakota and the Region.
