September 2016
It is such a privilege to have the opportunity to learn more about the wonderful work done by so many of our clubs in so many areas around the district.
We have a number of "Avenues of Service" Seminars on the horizon which are part of the 'Rotary Learning' opportunities provided by the district. They are the perfect vehicle for newer members to learn more as well of course for presidents and committee chairs to stay up to date. The recent Youth Service one was an excellent example. Community is next, followed by Vocational and then International - the dates are in the District Directory.
There is a Membership Webinar on 26th September - see details in this bulletin - there is a focus on Corporate Membership which is on the minds of some clubs - I commend it to you.
Don't overlook all the inspirational videos and other learning opportunities provided by RI on the www.rotary.org website - we can access all of those from home whenever we want or we can even share them at a club meeting. There's flexibility in those opportunities.
In this Rotary year, there will again be two Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) courses one of which will run over October & November, the other in the new calendar year. The dates & venue for the first will also be on the website. This is essential preparation for Presidents Elect and Presidents Nominee and is provided free to clubs for those. It is also an excellent opportunity for Rotarians to learn more about Rotary.
Best wishes to you all,
Carol Lawton

October is Vocational Service Month
Friday 28th October 2016
Early in the Rotary year is a great time to revisit Vocational Service and explore the potential value hidden in this not-that-well-understood aspect of Rotary membership.
The three tenets of Vocational Service are:
- Using the skills gained during your working life as part of service projects and helping others to discover new vocational interests;
- Adherence to and promotion of high ethical standards; and
- Recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations.
The importance placed on Vocational Service by Rotary International is clear - RI has it as a key component of its strategic plan. This should be no surprise to us, as once you understand what Vocational Service is, you quickly realise that there is probably no better area for Clubs to focus on, if we want to build membership, expand service opportunities and maintain our relevance.
But what can we do to enhance and encourage the application of Vocational Service within our Clubs? Fortunately it's not too difficult and gets easier if a basic strategy or framework is applied - like most things in life you have to focus on and put effort into what you want to achieve.
The next District Seminar on Vocational Service is on Friday 28th October at 7pm and is being held at the Mulgrave Country Club. This is a good opportunity to hear about successful projects and explore ideas for service projects with other Rotarians. Please put the date in your diaries and make sure your Club is represented at the seminar!

Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) request
Dear RAM Representatives and friends of RAM,
As you know, RAM has been looking for opportunities to send more teams of Rotary Volunteers overseas to assist with RAM programs in our target countries. I am now calling for expressions of interest to join teams going to Timor Leste.
The first team could leave as early as the last week in October to be in country during the weekend of 29th Oct and 5th Nov. The team Leader for this trip will be PDG Ian Dyball and the main focus of the mission will be to assist the new Rotary Club of Dili Lafaek to implement the "Healthy Villages" program in Timor Leste. This will commence with two villages, one in the Dili district and one in the Liquica district. The program will include educational presentations to the Village people, walk-arounds of the villages to identify issues and plan corrective actions and construction of concrete block waste storage/disposal units. These programs will occur on the weekends because of the local Rotarian's work commitments. Hopefully the team will also be able to observe and assist with NMCP bednet distributions at a different location during the week as well during the visit and there is also scope for providing assistance to local schools as we did in 2014.
Please let me know if you are interested or know of other Rotarians who might be, spread the word. Send me an email with your contact details stating whether you are interested in being part of the team in October / November this year or interested in other volunteer teams that could depart next year. If it is not possible to send a team this year the next opportunity will be in April 2017.
For recent information on RAM, visit our website www.ramaustralia.org go to the ARTICLES pulldown menu and select Conference Report for a complete summary of the recent annual RAM Conference. Presentations from this Conference can be downloaded from Dropbox with the following link:- https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1h99854i2qnchld/AADnpKhNzSljhyDM1sV455mha?dl=0 ( Note: the RAM annual report in this package is the 2015 report, the 2016 report has been published by RAWCS and can also be found on the RAM website under [ARTICLES; Reports; Annual Reports].)
I look forward to hearing from you, Kind Regards,
David Pearson

Challenge to Lead Program
The Challenge to Lead Program is a 3 day residential leadership program run by the Rotary Club of Doncaster on 13th, 14th and 15th October, 2016.
The Program is delivered pro bono by dedicated professional facilitators including the former Director of HR for HP and Telstra, a Senior Fellow Melbourne Business School, an advisor to Mt Eliza MBA program and a Principal Fellow of the Melbourne University Business School.
Throughout the Rotary network there is a pool of contacts and potential participants in management and professional positions who would either benefit themselves or recommend others who would benefit from the Program.
There is a high demand for good leadership. It is a must-have capability for any individual or organisation wanting to get ahead in the world and achieve and earn more. Leadership can be taught, learnt and developed and this course will help in this regard.
The Rotary Club of Doncaster is prepared to pay any Cluster Rotary Club a $500 fee for each individual referral who attends. We are aiming to run 2 courses concurrently with a minimum of 20 participants in each course.

Guest Speaker Opportunity
Jim McPhee, of Rotary Club of Monbulk has launched a well acclaimed Book, Tin Legs and Toasting Forks which chronicles the many challenges he had to overcome after the hip amputation of his left leg from bone cancer at the age of 13 in 1947. Although his prognosis was not good he survived and hopes his story might be an inspiration to any young person afflicted with a life threatening disability.
Jim is prepared to visit any interested club to give an account of his many challenges, many humorous, some with a degree of pathos, and will donate 30% of the price of each book which members may be interested in buying.

New Club for Camp Awakenings
You may have heard that the Rotary Club of Aspendale decided, reluctantly, to hand back their charter.
What does this mean for Camp Awakenings?
In a nutshell: It keeps on getting better.
Aspendale has always had close ties with the Rotary Club of Chelsea, and they have always been keen supporters of the camp. The members of Aspendale have transferred to Chelsea, and Camp Awakenings has become a project of the Rotary Club of Chelsea.
Chelsea have always been an active, strong club, and their involvement and fresh ideas can only be a good thing. The existing Camp Committee members from Aspendale will continue in their current roles and we look forward to your continued support for this important project.
