August 2016
Where has the time gone? I seem only to have blinked and six weeks of this Rotary year have flown past!
We're approaching the first of the quarterly College of Governors, Assistant Governors and Presidents meeting when there will be lots of material to share. There are plans for new Rotary Learning and Development opportunities (public speaking, project management, Rotary Leadership Institute) and the dates will be published as soon as they are available.
I really love learning about all the amazing work being done as we visit the clubs, it really is both affirming and heart-warming. Frank is also very interested to see how differently clubs operate. We both really appreciate the kindness and hospitality shared with us.
The calendar has details of the Avenues of Service seminars and I encourage you to share the opportunities provided to help us all learn more about Rotary projects - consider including those dates in your diaries and be inspired by the broad range of service activities provided throughout the district. I'll look forward to seeing you somewhere soon!
Best wishes to you all,
Carol Lawton

October is Vocational Service Month
Friday 28th October 2016
Early in the Rotary year is a great time to revisit Vocational Service and explore the potential value hidden in this not-that-well-understood aspect of Rotary membership.
The three tenets of Vocational Service are:
- Using the skills gained during your working life as part of service projects and helping others to discover new vocational interests;
- Adherence to and promotion of high ethical standards; and
- Recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations.
The importance placed on Vocational Service by Rotary International is clear - RI has it as a key component of its strategic plan. This should be no surprise to us, as once you understand what Vocational Service is, you quickly realise that there is probably no better area for Clubs to focus on, if we want to build membership, expand service opportunities and maintain our relevance.
But what can we do to enhance and encourage the application of Vocational Service within our Clubs? Fortunately it's not too difficult and gets easier if a basic strategy or framework is applied - like most things in life you have to focus on and put effort into what you want to achieve.
The next District Seminar on Vocational Service is on Friday 28th October at 7pm and is being held at the Mulgrave Country Club. This is a good opportunity to hear about successful projects and explore ideas for service projects with other Rotarians. Please put the date in your diaries and make sure your Club is represented at the seminar!

Challenge to Lead Program
The Challenge to Lead Program is a 3 day residential leadership program run by the Rotary Club of Doncaster on 13th, 14th and 15th October, 2016.
The Program is delivered pro bono by dedicated professional facilitators including the former Director of HR for HP and Telstra, a Senior Fellow Melbourne Business School, an advisor to Mt Eliza MBA program and a Principal Fellow of the Melbourne University Business School.
Throughout the Rotary network there is a pool of contacts and potential participants in management and professional positions who would either benefit themselves or recommend others who would benefit from the Program.
There is a high demand for good leadership. It is a must-have capability for any individual or organisation wanting to get ahead in the world and achieve and earn more. Leadership can be taught, learnt and developed and this course will help in this regard.
The Rotary Club of Doncaster is prepared to pay any Cluster Rotary Club a $500 fee for each individual referral who attends. We are aiming to run 2 courses concurrently with a minimum of 20 participants in each course.

Guest Speaker Opportunity
Jim McPhee, of Rotary Club of Monbulk has launched a well acclaimed Book, Tin Legs and Toasting Forks which chronicles the many challenges he had to overcome after the hip amputation of his left leg from bone cancer at the age of 13 in 1947. Although his prognosis was not good he survived and hopes his story might be an inspiration to any young person afflicted with a life threatening disability.
Jim is prepared to visit any interested club to give an account of his many challenges, many humorous, some with a degree of pathos, and will donate 30% of the price of each book which members may be interested in buying.

New Club for Camp Awakenings
You may have heard that the Rotary Club of Aspendale decided, reluctantly, to hand back their charter.
What does this mean for Camp Awakenings?
In a nutshell: It keeps on getting better.
Aspendale has always had close ties with the Rotary Club of Chelsea, and they have always been keen supporters of the camp. The members of Aspendale have transferred to Chelsea, and Camp Awakenings has become a project of the Rotary Club of Chelsea.
Chelsea have always been an active, strong club, and their involvement and fresh ideas can only be a good thing. The existing Camp Committee members from Aspendale will continue in their current roles and we look forward to your continued support for this important project.
