One of the aspects of good leadership and governance is "continuity". This concept has been the subject of much discussion in Rotary circles for many years. At District level we have what we call the "G Train", comprising the current Governor and those on the pathway to follow. As from next year this group will also include the Immediate Past Governor. At club level, where everything that Rotary achieves is done, continuity is vital. Most club projects are continuous in nature and roll on irrespective of the change of Rotary years. So, it is at this time of the Rotary annual cycle that we must all ensure that there is efficient and effective handover of information between those departing roles and those taking up those roles. The days of, "in my year" are long gone. A prime responsibility of all Rotary leaders is to effect smooth transition from one administration group to the next.

The recent Council on Legislation has been reported upon and detailed reports are published elsewhere, but I wish to comment on two of the outcomes. Clubs have now been given flexibility as to meeting regularity and style. I encourage clubs to experiment with how these options may benefit the ability of your club to remain vital and be attractive to not only new members but also to existing members. I suggest that to hasten slowly is the best way to explore these opportunities. The other opportunity is that enabling Rotaractors to become Rotarians as well. As I read it, it will be up to clubs on an individual basis to determine how this will happen, but may I encourage clubs to embrace their Rotaractors and encourage this dual membership opportunity.

I want to raise the issue of "Rotary Post-Nominals". There are a few Rotarians out there who use as part of their signature line PHF or PHF +2 etc. There are no post nominals in Rotary. All identification is taken care of with the prefix, such as PP. Signature clauses can and should contain the title the person holds, or held in Rotary, be that a club, District, or International title. Given that a Paul Harris Fellow, as worthy as the title is, is in International Rotary circles an acknowledgement of a contribution made to The Rotary Foundation. In Australia, and in some other countries, clubs use the PHF system as an award mechanism to acknowledge exceptional service or contributions to the Rotary cause. This is good. However, a PHF can be and is presented to an individual whose financial contribution to the Foundation exceeds certain benchmarks. It is not appropriate therefore to affix letters such as PHF after your name when signing letters or email communications, and is certainly inappropriate to contain such suffix on a business card.

Best wishes to all as you continue to Be a Gift to the World.

Guest Speaker Opportunity

Jim McPhee, of Rotary Club of Monbulk has launched a well acclaimed Book, Tin Legs and Toasting Forks which chronicles the many challenges he had to  overcome after the hip amputation of his left leg from bone cancer at the age of 13 in 1947. Although his prognosis was not good he survived and hopes his story might be an inspiration to any young person afflicted with a life threatening disability.

Jim is prepared to visit any interested club to give an account of his many challenges, many humorous, some with a degree of pathos, and will donate 30% of the price of each book which members may be interested in buying.
