March 2016

Well, the dust has settled after what I thought was a most successful District Conference in Shepparton. Thank you to all those members and partners who attended and contributed to the atmosphere of the event. Thank you also to the many Rotarians that have been contacting me with their positive comments about the event. A lot of hard work and planning [approx. two and a half years] goes into these events and I am totally indebted to the Conference Committee and all the hard workers from my wonderful club, Box Hill for making it happen.

There is still much activity around the District in this Rotary year. We will soon be inspired by the various clubs that stage School's ANZAC Services. I was fortunate enough to attend many of these last year and I am certainly looking forward to returning to these events this year. The major District activity is of course The District Golf Day on April 14th. Details are contained elsewhere in this fine publication, but I encourage as many golfers: men; women, of all abilities to join in a fun day.

These next few months see some "transition" programs underway, where orientation and preparation programs for the 2016-17 Rotary year will be undertaken. Please make a personal commitment to attend the sessions relevant to you to ensure that your club benefits from you being fully prepared to discharge your own personal Rotary responsibilities in the new Rotary year.

Many of us will have a break from Rotary over the Easter break and I wish you and your families an enjoyable and restful time together.

Cheers

David Tolstrup

District Governor Nomination Update

Unfortunately in the February edition of Highlights there was some confusion caused regarding the dates for District Governor Nomination.

The correct dates for the process are:
  • Closing date for nomination to the nominating committee Friday March 11th
  • Closing date for nominations as District Governor Thursday March 24th
  • Interview day for selection of 2018-19 District Governor - Sunday April 3rd.
Apologies for any confusion that might have been caused.

 Storage of Rotary Advertising Banners

The district has a number of Rotary advertising banners available to be borrowed by clubs or committees for promotion purposes.  We are looking for somewhere, reasonably  central in the district, for the banners to be stored so that they can be booked, collected & returned (ideally on week days).

There are 5 tear drop banners in bags, 11 standard size pull-up banners and 2 much larger pull-up banners.

If anyone is able to assist with storing these items from the 1st July for 12 months, please contact DGE Carol Lawton clawton@melbpc.org.au or 0411 249 280."

Guest Speaker Opportunity

Jim McPhee, of Rotary Club of Monbulk has launched a well acclaimed Book, Tin Legs and Toasting Forks which chronicles the many challenges he had to  overcome after the hip amputation of his left leg from bone cancer at the age of 13 in 1947. Although his prognosis was not good he survived and hopes his story might be an inspiration to any young person afflicted with a life threatening disability.

Jim is prepared to visit any interested club to give an account of his many challenges, many humorous, some with a degree of pathos, and will donate 30% of the price of each book which members may be interested in buying.

Jim can be contacted on 5968 1656 or 0427 044670.

Rotary eClub of Greater Melbourne

Dear All,

At our Special General Meeting this evening, our members unanimously supported the motion to return our Charter to RI at the end of June.

We've just posted the following on Facebook.
"As we don't have enough capacity to continue as we would wish - with our members' lives moving in so many different directions - we have decided to close down at the end of June.  We are now considering the many options available to us - throughout the world - to continue our Rotary journey!!  Thank you members - past and present - for sharing the ride!"

With many thanks,
Carol
