September 2015
In my travels around the District I have been talking about "opening the window to the world of Rotary knowledge". I am of course referring to "My Rotary" the exciting gateway to a world of information and experience including the access to discussion groups on any matter of interest along with tutorials and other self education tools.
Within our district we have been complementing these tools with our "avenue of service" seminars. We have had good participation at those already held with most positive feedback. Three remain: Community; Vocational; & International. Please look out for these seminars and register to further your Rotary knowledge and networks.
The other, significant, offering that we provide is the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) program. Dates and details for the next two series of this great program have just been released and are contained in this issue of Highlights. This program is essential for incoming club Presidents and as such registration is free for all Presidents Elect or President Nominees. The program is also excellent for future committee chairs and any other Rotarian wanting to gain a better understanding of this great organisation.
By participating in these various learning opportunities we will all build on our ability to "Be a Gift to the World."

The Challenge to Lead
Based on the extensively researched and internationally acclaimed material written by Kouzes and Posner, whose book has sold over 2 million copies, this all-new program casts their enduring work on "The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership®" in the context of today's world. With best-in- class published materials and a tried and tested experiential learning process, including a pre- and post-program 360-degree online assessment, participants will learn how to:
- Model the Way
- Inspire
- Challenge
- Enable
- Encourage
The Challenge to Lead programs provide an eminently practical, experiential and exhilarating model of leadership development that has proven effectiveness in liberating the leadership potential in any person, at any level, in any organisation. By attending, participants find a wealth of resources that help them discover where they want their leadership journey to take them and the tools for developing the skills they need to reach their destination.

Joint Family Day between Rotary and Monash Childrens Hospital
On November 22nd 2015 a joint family fun day will be held between Rotary and the Monash Children's. It is hoped that this will be an annual events.
The event will be held at Jells Park Glen Waverley between 10AM and 4PM.
To be a success we would like your help please.
The day will have children's races plus stalls. What we need from you is:
· Man power to help marshal and other duties
· Clubs to provide stalls for either food or activities i.e. face painting etc (clubs can use this as a fundraiser in itself as the agreement is half of the net profit to Rotary and half to Monash Children's)
· And sponsorship of the differing events i.e. cover the cost of the participant ribbons / certificates.
This promises to be a big day and hopefully a signature event for our district. From the publicity and presence there is the prospect of new members.
If you are able to support this wonderful event, please contact Claire Button on claireb@bigpond.net.au

The Rotary Foundation Cadre of Technical Coordinators
The Rotary Foundation is currently looking to expand its Cadre of volunteer advisers to evaluate Foundation projects.
Representing all Rotary districts and a wide spectrum of professional expertise, the cadre is a diverse group of volunteer Rotarians who monitor and evaluate Foundation grant projects all over the world by conducting paper reviews and traveling to project sites to evaluate technical feasibility and compliance with The Rotary Foundation's missions and objectives.
The cadre is currently recruiting volunteers in the following areas.
- Maternal and child health professionals (such as nurses and obstetricians) in Africa and Asia
- Water and sanitation professionals (such as civil and mechanical engineers) in Africa and Asia
- Spanish-speaking auditors in North and Central America
- Rotarians living in Africa, in all areas of focus
- Rotarians with expertise in monitoring and evaluation, sustainability, and community needs assessments
If you know of any Rotarians in your district who would make great cadre members, I encourage you to forward them the attached cadre registration instructions.

Domestic Violence Projects
The public debate on Domestic Violence has created a groundswell of activity. This is an important opportunity for Rotary Clubs to engage with their local communities on a matter of great importance and with significant public attention. If your club is undertaking a DV project, please advise PDG Tony Monley at anthony.monley@bigpond.com as we would like to share experience across the District and if possible, capitalise on the public relations. In the meantime, if you're looking for a speaker or a program to support, consider Rotary's Violence Free Families campaign, headlined by Colleen Hewitt - follow this link to see Colleen's latest video, with credit given to Rotary by the Prime Minister https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK4Ym-Ie91Q. $5 from the sale of each of Colleen's latest CD goes to Rotary's Violence Free Families program. These CDs, at $20 each are a great collection of Colleen's latest blues recordings - they make great guest-speaker gifts. CDs can be purchased directly from PDG Tony Monley at anthony.monley@bigpond.com.
