June 2015

At the time of writing Kathy and I have just finished at the International Convention and are slowly making our way home through South America.  With seven representatives there from our small District, we were well represented.  The Convention is a fabulous opportunity to gain a perspective of the internationality of Rotary and this year was no different.  With an impressive range of speakers, a recurring theme this year was gender equality in developing countries.  As one speaker put it, an educated 24 year old woman who can bring an income into the household creates a whole different dynamic to a 15 year old uneducated wife - even in arranged marriages.  Rotary programs in water and sanitation, health, education and economic development are just so important in changing this dynamic.  We won't find peace in this world till we deal with the underlying drivers of health, education and employment.

This is the final issue of Highlights for this year and while I will express my thanks more formally at the Changeover, I'd just like to let you know what a privilege it's been to serve you this year.  Both Kathy and I have enjoyed the opportunity and would recommend it to anyone.  Can I also, on your behalf, thank Michael Ellinger for his tireless effort in producing Highlights on time every month - and for keeping me on track!

Lighting up Rotary,

Tony Monley

District Governor 2014-2015

Rotary District 9810, Australia

           please note.........
Getting involved in Australian Indigenous Projects

Why get involved?

The local and urban situation in Australia, 2015 reports that;

- Over 100 Aboriginal children in the Eastern suburbs are in 'out of home' care.

- People in remote areas; Western Australia, South Australia, Northern Territory, have had basic fundamental freedoms stripped, their control removed and their land rights attacked. There is talk of empowerment, but the model was flawed from the outset as it failed to include the Aboriginal people before the decision and there are massive drives to assimilation'.

District 9810 has responded since 2008 with a number of successful projects being implemented. Projects have continued and here are a few your Club may want to be involved with in the very near future, maybe during the remainder of the 2014 - 2015 Rotary Year

 Distict Stamp Fund

Your District Stamp Fund needs used stamps - we have had to ring around for supplies lately!! Any stamps will do, high value and foreign varieties bring in the most dollars.

This is a diminishing resource so let us use it while we can, it will not cost you a cent but will hopefully improve the lives of the less fortunate amongst us.

National Rotary Success Conference and Youth Summit

Over the last two years Rotarians have been asking when we were we going to have another National Rotary Success Conference. It is going to happen this September! I would urge you to register now for what I am sure will be a great conference.

I would like to invite all Rotarians to the 2015 Rotary Success Conference and Youth Summit which will be held at the Hellenic Club, Canberra on 5- 6 September 2015. This conference is an affordable conference as the price of $120 per person covers, morning teas, lunch, afternoon tea and the Saturday night dinner. It will commence at 8.30am on the Saturday morning and conclude at 12.30pm on the Sunday.

All attendees will be able to have input into the conference breakout sessions over the weekend. It will be a conference that everyone will get something out of.

Who should be attending?  All Rotary Leaders, Presidents and Presidents Elect, PR Chairs, Membership Chairs and Future Rotary Leaders and Rotarians who want to be involved in the continuing success of Rotary in Australia.  At this conference you will be able to participate in breakout sessions on various topics such as Membership Retention, Membership Recruitment and Extension, Diversity in Rotary, Flexibility and Innovative Clubs in the Future, Leadership, Public Image and Media, and more.  As well, people will find out what has been successful for some clubs in growing and getting stronger.  Social media will also be explored with Rotary Public Image Coordinator Wendy Gaborit leading the discussion.  Wendy has a great grasp on social media and how it can work for clubs and getting engaged with the local community.

There will be presentations about a number of new innovative ideas on a wide range of topics, all practical ideas that you can use in your club.

The program will consist of mainly breakout groups enabling everyone to be able to participate and interact over the weekend in a practical, worthwhile and meaningful way.

Coupled with the Rotary Success Conference this year will be a Youth Summit for people under 40 years of age.  The Youth Summit will be an opportunity for people to put forward ideas and practical thoughts on how Rotary clubs can interact with younger people ... how and why Rotary clubs need to become more involved with Rotaract and Interact.

This Conference will be focussing on the future.  We are positive that every Rotarian will gain practical knowledge and new ideas to take back to their Clubs and Districts from this Conference.  You will meet Rotarians from across Australia and be able to share with them your ideas and hear their ideas; it will be a great experience for everyone.
