The Power of Youth
with Rodger Nishioka
On Being Visionaries and Prophets
We are kicking off our new Sr. high program with a wonderful opportunity for all Sr. High Youth. We will meet every Sunday at 9:00 am in the youth room at Manwaring.
Rodger Nishioka spoke to 1,500 youth at the last E.Y.E (Episcopal Youth Event) where 5 Ascension teens attended and were transformed. He is a very powerful speaker.
Bishop Prior has been quoted in saying "The Power of Youth" is a comprehensive approach to engaging young people in issues relevant to their lives. The process is well laid out, easy to follow and theologically sound - all of which invited deep reflection and meaningful interaction.

Who is in the Pulpit in Epiphany?
We are celebrating the season after Epiphany with a special Lay Preachers Series. Each Sunday a different member of our congregation preaches at both Eucharists. These preachers represent the wide variety of perspectives and personalities who make up Ascension. They are asking, how do I hear today's readings? What is God saying to us? Come listen this Sunday! This Sunday's Speaker will be Andrea Tipple
I was raised in the Episcopal Church and have attended Ascension for over 10 years. Currently, I am exploring my faith actively by participating in the Education for Ministry Program which is both exciting and challenging. With God's help and Jesus' teaching, I am trying to live in accordance with the greatest commandments; "to love the Lord my God with all my heart and with all my soul and and with all my mind" and "to love my neighbor as myself". |
Deadline for signing up for Guatemala is this Sunday, February 10th!
You need $300.00 as a down payment to hold your name.

Lenten Reflection Time

Lenten Reflection Time in the Parish Library
Starting Sunday, February 17th
Sunday Mornings, 9:10 a.m.
OR
Tuesday Evenings, 7:00 p.m.
Join us for discussion and reflection on John's account of Christ's passion. Email office@aechurch.org to reserve your copy of the reflection book.
When is love not mixed up with something else? Love and the desire to possess, love and the need to control, love and the need to be needed, love and the lust to absorb, love and condescension, love and narcissism.
In this short book of meditations on the Passion according to Saint John, Martin L. Smith shows how, in the Christian mystery, love itself must be crucified and die to be reborn as the grace of communion, as love set free.

Friends, after a wonderfully fruitful (and delicious) gathering to discuss the book Making a Home for Faith by Elizabeth Caldwell, I am struck by the passion your community shares for living into your baptismal promises and raising children with a strong sense of the faith and traditions so important to their families. Our next meeting to discuss faith formation for the young people of Ascension will be Monday the 18th of February from 6pm-8pm (note that the time has been pushed back a bit to allow for folks to more easily attend). We will focus on pairing curriculum with developmental stages and the outcomes we hope for our children. If you follow this link, http://acstillwaterhomeforfaith.wordpress.com/category/curriculum/ you will be taken to all of the blog posts that discuss specific curriculum.
Peace,

Want to know what is going on? Ask Jake Doneux.
Since September 2012, Jake has served as the youth representative to the vestry. Jake is a voice for youth to the vestry and an ear for youth from the vestry. As this is a new position, the vestry and Jake have worked together to better define the role and how it can serve the parish. Seek Jake out to learn more about the vestry's work. Jake will complete his term in May 2013.
Jake grew up at Ascension and is active in the youth group. He serves as a peer minister and was a member of the Guatemala Service Team in summer 2012. He is a senior at Stillwater High School, an Eagle Scout, and enjoys playing soccer.

Anne Hutchinson (baptized July 20, 1591 - August 20, 1643)
was a pioneer settler in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Netherlands, and the unauthorized minister of a dissident church discussion group. Hutchinson held Bible meetings for women that soon had great appeal to men as well. Eventually, she went beyond Bible study to proclaim her own theological interpretations of sermons, some of which offended the colony leadership. A major controversy ensued, and after a trial before a jury of officials and clergy in 1638, she was banished from her colony. During the trial, Hutchinson skillfully defended herself until it was clear that there was no escape from the court's predetermined judgment. Cornered, she addressed the court with her own judgment:
"...you have no power over my body, neither can you do me any harme, for I am in the hands of the eternall Jehovah my Saviour, I am at his appointment, the bounds of my habitation are cast in heaven, no further doe I esteeme of any mortal man than creatures in his hand, I feare none but the great Jehovah, which hath foretold me of these things, and I doe verily beleeve that he will deliver me out of our hands, therefore take heed how you proceed against me; for I know that for this you goe about to doe to me, God will ruine you and your posterity, and this whole state."
She is a key figure in the study of the development of religious freedom in England's American colonies and the history of women in ministry. The state of Massachusetts honors her with a State House monument calling her a "courageous exponent of civil liberty and religious toleration."
