Global Mission Sunday, October 28th, 2012
The Guatemala team will be putting together a presentation from their trip in August to the whole congregation on Sunday, October 28th at the 8:00 & 10:00 am services. You won't want to miss it. We each will talk about how the trip has impacted our lives since returning. There also will be a film montage and videos of some of our pictures. Here are some other things that will be going on in the Parish Hall after the presentation.
* We will begin our fundraising for our next trip with a sale of poinsettias from Rose Floral. You can purchase a plant for $15.00 in red, white or pink. Then you will be given a voucher to go to Rose Floral and pick out the one that you want starting the weekend of thanksgiving. We will deliver to anyone that needs our help.
* There also will be some Guatemala coffee and hot chocolate for sale.
* The team will be hosting a Guatemalan Breakfast of Breakfast Burritos following the 10:00 am service and pastries and coffee following the 8:00 am service.
* Come in to Parish Hall to watch the slide presentation.
We will be returning to God's Child Project this coming July 10-20, 2013, so put it on your calendar and speak to anyone on the team if you are interested in going this summer.

ECO-FRIENDLY CREMATION
Like it or not, none of us will be alive forever. What will be your end-of-life journey? When your time comes, what are your intentions for the body you'll leave behind?
On Sunday, November 4th Jim Bradshaw of Bradshaw Funeral and Cremation Services will be here to talk about planning for end of life and the options, including "green cremation," a gentle, eco-friendly alternative to flame-based cremation.
Sunday, November 4
Immediately after the 8:00 service and the 10:00 service
Parish Hall
In addition, Father Buff will share his thoughts about the end-of-life journey, and talk about the services offered at Ascension. Bring your questions - whether philosophical or logistical - and gain a better sense of the options available to you and your loved ones.

...to serve requires reflection...
Lead and Serve
In January, our vestry proposed a more comprehensive approach to church leadership in new bylaws. You, the congregation, approved it overwhelmingly. Now is the time to join in this leadership.
The following teams or committees provide for the critical functions of the church. The bylaws specify that a total of at least 11 members and up to 23 members serve on these teams. Please consider where you would like to serve, and contact Senior Warden Katie Keller or Rector Buff Grace to sign up.
Thank you.
The Standing Committees shall be Constituted as Follows:
Nominating: Three lay persons, each serving a term of three years, except the first members who shall serve staggered terms of one year, two years and three years. The purpose of the Nominating Committee includes, but is not limited to: Cultivate and present skilled, qualified candidates to the congregation for election to the vestry.
Finance: The treasurer and four lay persons, with two lay persons having terms of two years and the other two lay persons having terms of three years. The initial members shall serve staggered terms so that one of the two year positions will be a term of one year, and one of the three year positions will be a term of two years. The purpose of the Finance Committee includes, but is not limited to: Assist the Treasurer in advising the vestry on the finances of the parish.
Worship: The rector if there be one, current clergy as directed by the rector, the director of music, vergers, and up to 5 lay persons. The purpose of the Worship Committee includes, but is not limited to: Plan and create liturgy that ensures the parish members "continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread, and in the prayers." (1979BCP, 304) [Question 4 of Baptismal Covenant]
Formation: The rector if there be one, current clergy as directed by the rector, the director of children and youth ministry, and up to 5 lay persons. (1979BCP, 302)[Questions 5 & 6 of Baptismal Covenant]
Mission: The deacon if there be one, current clergy as directed by the rector, the director of children and youth ministry, and up to 5 lay persons. The purpose of the Mission Committee includes, but is not limited to: Plan and create opportunities for parish members "to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ." Notes from Nancy
on "Music Time at Children's Chapel"
We've been having some very interesting times at Children's Chapel this Fall so far. Here's a sample of people who've visited and shared their musical talents with us:
September 9th: Tom Hendrichsen, a renowned bagpipe player who plays with the Chicago Band, explained a little of the history, dress, and instrument detail in the art of bagpiping.
September 16th: Tom Anders, former member of the Ascension Youth Choir and graduate of Carlson School of Business at the University of Minnesota, talked about singing, the connection between music and math, and the connection between music, math and religion. Then he joined us in song.
September 23rd: Recorder Consort players explained their instruments and a bit of history concerning the various recorders. A piece was performed up close for the kids.
October 7th: Larry Neumann, local band teacher and professional jazz performer spoke about the saxophone. We sang "Jesus Loves Me" accompanied by sax and then Larry explained how he would improvise on this tune when the adult choir would sing it at the offertory.
After every one of these sessions we've sung!

ALFRED THE GREAT KING OF THE WEST SAXONS (26 OCT 899)
When the Gospel was first preached in Britain, the island was inhabited by Celtic peoples. In the 400's, pagan Germanic tribes, the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, invaded Britain and drove the Christian Celts out of what is now England into Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. The new arrivals (called collectively the Anglo-Saxons) were then converted by Celtic missionaries moving in from the one side and Roman missionaries moving in from the other. (They then sent missionaries of their own, such as Boniface, to their pagan relatives on the Continent.)
In the 800's the cycle partly repeated itself, as the Christian Anglo-Saxons were invaded by the Danes, pagan raiders, who rapidly conquered the northeast portion of England. They seemed about to conquer the entire country and eliminate all resistance when they were turned back by Alfred, King of the West Saxons.
Alfred was born in 849 at Wantage, Berkshire, youngest of five sons of King Aethelwulf. He wished to become a monk, but after the deaths (all in battle, I think) of his father and his four older brothers, he was made king in 871. He proved to be skilled at military tactics, and devised a defensive formation which the Danish charge was unable to break. After a decisive victory at Edington in 878, he reached an agreement with the Danish leader Guthrum, by which the Danes would retain a portion of northeastern England and be given other concessions in return for their agreement to accept baptism and Christian instruction. From a later point of view, it seems obvious that such a promise could not involve a genuine change of heart, and was therefore meaningless (and indeed, one Dane complained that the white robe that he was given after his baptism was not nearly so fine as the two that he had received after the two previous times that he had been defeated and baptized). However, Alfred's judgement proved sound. Guthrum, from his point of view, agreed to become a vassal of Christ. His nobles and chief warriors, being his vassals, were thereby obligated to give their feudal allegiance to Christ as well. They accepted baptism and the presence among them of Christian priests and missionaries to instruct them. The door was opened for conversions on a more personal level in that and succeeding generations.
