...to serve requires reflection...
Lead and Serve
In January, our vestry proposed a more comprehensive approach to church leadership in new bylaws. You, the congregation, approved it overwhelmingly. Now is the time to join in this leadership.
The following teams or committees provide for the critical functions of the church. The bylaws specify that a total of at least 11 members and up to 23 members serve on these teams. Please consider where you would like to serve, and contact Senior Warden Katie Keller or Rector Buff Grace to sign up.
Thank you.
The Standing Committees shall be Constituted as Follows:
Nominating: Three lay persons, each serving a term of three years, except the first members who shall serve staggered terms of one year, two years and three years. The purpose of the Nominating Committee includes, but is not limited to: Cultivate and present skilled, qualified candidates to the congregation for election to the vestry.
Finance: The treasurer and four lay persons, with two lay persons having terms of two years and the other two lay persons having terms of three years. The initial members shall serve staggered terms so that one of the two year positions will be a term of one year, and one of the three year positions will be a term of two years. The purpose of the Finance Committee includes, but is not limited to: Assist the Treasurer in advising the vestry on the finances of the parish.
Worship: The rector if there be one, current clergy as directed by the rector, the director of music, vergers, and up to 5 lay persons. The purpose of the Worship Committee includes, but is not limited to: Plan and create liturgy that ensures the parish members "continue in the apostles' teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread, and in the prayers." (1979BCP, 304) [Question 4 of Baptismal Covenant]
Formation: The rector if there be one, current clergy as directed by the rector, the director of children and youth ministry, and up to 5 lay persons. The purpose of the Formation Committee includes, but is not limited to: Plan and offer experiences that help parish members "grow into the full stature of Christ." (1979BCP, 302)[Questions 5 & 6 of Baptismal Covenant]
Mission: The deacon if there be one, current clergy as directed by the rector, the director of children and youth ministry, and up to 5 lay persons. The purpose of the Mission Committee includes, but is not limited to: Plan and create opportunities for parish members "to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ." (1979BCP, 855)[Questions 7 & 8 of Baptismal Covenant]

Global Mission Sunday, October 28th, 2012
The Guatemala team will be putting together a presentation from their trip in August to the whole congregation on Sunday, October 28th at the 8:00 & 10:00 am services. You won't want to miss it. We each will talk about how the trip has impacted our lives since returning. There also will be a film montage and videos of some of our pictures. Here are some other things that will be going on in the Parish Hall after the presentation.
* We will begin our fundraising for our next trip with a sale of poinsettias from Rose Floral. You can purchase a plant for $15.00 in red, white or pink. Then you will be given a voucher to go to Rose Floral and pick out the one that you want starting the weekend of thanksgiving. We will deliver to anyone that needs our help.
* There also will be some Guatemala coffee and hot chocolate for sale.
* The team will be hosting a Guatemalan Breakfast following the 10:00 am service with pastries and coffee following the 8:00am service.
* Come in to Parish Hall to watch the slide presentation.
We will be returning to God's Child Project this coming July 10-20, 2013, so put it on your calendar and speak to anyone on the team if you are interested in going this summer.

History of Women at Ascension continued..
By Betty Erickson
Beginning in the sixties and seventies, the roles of the lay persons at Ascension changed for both men and women. Members of the congregation began to read lessons, and the choir took a greater part in the liturgy. Girls were permitted as acolytes; the first three - Debby Phillip, Katie Engler, and Jules Erickson, beginning in the seventies. Marge Humphries was the first woman elected to the vestry, and Dolliebelle Maddox, the first senior warden.
After the General Convention of 1976, when women were accepted in the priesthood, more women took part in the liturgy. Lectors and Lay Eucharistic Ministers and Visitors were licensed, both men and women. Ascension has had women priests as assistant rectors - LeeAnn Watkins, Joanie Delamater, Michelle Morgan; interim rectors - Rosalie Hall, Janet Wheelock; and deacons - Mary Farr, Margy Mattlin, Mary Jo Feely, and several are in training for the diaconate or priesthood. Several young women from the parish have achieved priesthood - Cynthia Bronson, Lisa Kraske.
Ascension women can be very proud of their long history of service to the church, and will certainly continue that service, proudly, into the future.

ECO-FRIENDLY CREMATION
Like it or not, none of us will be alive forever. What will be your end-of-life journey? When your time comes, what are your intentions for the body you'll leave behind?
On Sunday, November 4th Jim Bradshaw of Bradshaw Funeral and Cremation Services will be here to talk about planning for end of life and the options, including "green cremation," a gentle, eco-friendly alternative to flame-based cremation.
Sunday, November 4
Immediately after the 8:00 service and the 10:00 service
Parish Hall
In addition, Father Buff will share his thoughts about the end-of-life journey, and talk about the services offered at Ascension. Bring your questions - whether philosophical or logistical - and gain a better sense of the options available to you and your loved ones.

Sign up to participate in a conversation drive with Minnesotans United For All Families!
We are calling to talk to either known supporters or undecided voters. Our calls to supporters are to invite them to a conversation drive in order to build the largest grassroots campaign in Minnesota history. We call undecided voters to have conversations with them about why marriage matters and ask them questions about where they stand on the issue. This is a voter conversation drive unlike any you've ever done before! Each conversation drive includes a training on how to talk to either supporters or undecided voters.
This is the most important work you can be doing at this point!

Henry Martyn
Missionary and Translator (19 October 1812) Henry Martyn was born in 1781, studied at Cambridge, and became Senior Wrangler. (That is, he won the Cambridge University annual mathematics problem-solving competition, and was accordingly recognized as the University's best undergraduate mathematician.) "Wrangling" is a British University expression for solving mathematical problems.) He had, moreover, a considerable facility in languages. Under the encouragement of Charles Simeon (see 12 Nov 1836), he abandoned his intention of going into law and instead went to India as a chaplain in 1806. In the six remaining years of his life, he translated the New Testament into Hindi and Persian, revised an Arabic translation of the New Testament, and translated the Psalter into Persian and the Prayer Book into Hindi. In 1811 he left India for Persia, hoping to do further translations and to improve his existing ones, there and in Arabia. But travel in those days was not a healthy occupation, and he fell ill and eventually died at Tokat on October 16, 1812. (The American Calendar commemorates him on 19 October.) He was buried by the Armenian church there, with the honors ordinarily reserved for one of their own bishops. His diary has been called "one of the most precious treasures of Anglican devotion."
