February can be a busy month. Most of us are gearing up for what we hope to be a busy and productive year. Depending on the weather we hope to be busy in the field and not just in the office.
This February we have one of those rare opportunities to enjoy the Winter Olympics on TV. The athletes who compete are truly amazing people with talent, determination and strong work ethics. The winter events start on Feb. 7 and end on Feb. 23. You can find them broadcast on the television and internet.
It's not that far until March Madness. CPG will send out a reminder to participate in the Annual CPG Bracket Competition when the brackets are ready. There's no fee to enter, it's just for the fun of it and bragging rights for a year. Watch for the email to join the fun. |
CPG Paving, Parking Lot & Pervious Committee Updates
|
The 3P's Committee wanted our members to have a marketing brief or sales tool to handout or email potential owners or designers on:
They've completed these tools and you can find them on our website. Click on the individual flyer above and save them to your computer. Or know we'll have them on our CPG website for you to find when you may need them. The Sustainable Benefits flyer applies to not only Concrete Pavements but Concrete Homes and Buildings too.
The committee has worked hard to set up several educational events this spring to educate ourselves and our customers: architects, engineers, designers, owners, general contractors, sub contractors, etc.
- Feb. 13 For contractors and ready mix producers, Software Training for Comparing Equivalent Concrete & Asphalt Parking Lots
- Apr. 3 For Architects Only, An Introduction to the Software for Comparing Equivalent Concrete & Asphalt Parking Lots
- Apr. 16 Pervious Concrete Technician Certification
- Apr. 17 Training for Architects, Engineers and designers for the Software to Compare Equivalent Concrete & Asphalt Parking Lots
To find out more information about these events or opportunities, see the links in the sidebar to the left.

Updating our Membership Directory |
You will be receiving a notice in February, via email to update the information we have for you and your company in our membership directory. CPG will be uploading the most current version of our membership directory in March to our website. We will also mass email our directory to each of our member too. So if you've moved, have new phone numbers, new employees to list, or new email addresses, please be sure to let us know.

Knowing your EPD's and PCR's |
We've talked about Environmental Product Declarations and Product Category Rules in this newsletter several times before. They will be more and more important in the commercial building market starting this year, as the new LEED v.4 has been released and emphasizes/requires using EPD's for credits.
The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association has done an excellent job of making resources available to us to help us understand them and how they are obtained and used:
We encourage anyone working on LEED projects in the future to become familiar with them. |

Students Win with Concrete |
The Regional Kansas City First Lego League conducted their big competition Jan. 18, 2014 at Union Station. First Lego League is a robotics program for students ages 9-14. Teams are assigned a challenge and a LEGO MindStorms kit and learn how to design, build, and program their robot. This year's challenge, Nature's Fury, requires teams to research and present their own solutions to natural disasters, and discover what can be done when natural disasters occur in our towns and cities.
The "Brick Ops" team from Overland Park, KS was one of 41 teams competing for only 13 trophies. They won first place for best "Project Research". Their creative solution to tornado safety was to develop "ToPAS", Tornado Protection Assurance System; which included a concrete safe room, a family safety plan checklist and a survival products order form. Their research included interviewing Bill Ebel, Overland Park City Manager, Bob Barker, Amvic and Christy Martin, CPG. Congratulations to Libby, AJ, Taylor, Ethan and Michael! Job well done! |

From November, the indices were relatively unchanged. Steel was up 0.3 percent, concrete increased 0.2 percent, and asphalt fell 0.2 percent. Lumber remained stabled.
