Greetings!

Back to School!  For some a jump for joy, for others a anxious first day of kindergarten! Regardless, the kids will all be back to routines, homework and activities!  For us in construction, it's nose to the grindstone.  Work like crazy while it's good and get as much done before the cold weather sets in. Please watch out for the kids on the streets headed to school and home.

So what's new?  Brief Summary:

New in Pervious Mix Design Options:
  • Water/cement ratio ranges .30 -.35
  • Prewetted light weight fine aggregates for an internal curing option
  • Super absorbent polymers as an internal curing option
  • The possibility of using 1/3 to 1/2 the original admixtures when using internal curing options
New in Pervious Construction:
  • Saw cutting the joints with a conventional concrete saw (with some limitations, see the details in the spec and handbook)
  • Not using poly sheeting for curing when using one of the two internal curing options AND the ambient temperatures are < 90 degrees and > 40 degrees for the next 7 days
  • Substituting soy bean oil cure for a typical cure & seal when using one of the two internal curing options
  • Using a densifier as a spray cure when using an internal curing method (densifier as used in polished concrete)
  • Using a densifier as when there might be surface delamination present on an aged existing pervious pavement

Note:  There have been and currently are several new pervious concrete installations in the area this year, Northgate Senior Living,  Molle Volkswagon, Bancroft Parking Lot, & KU Lot 54,

Single Pour Concrete Homes, Thomas Edison

If you are interested in Concrete Homes there a wonderful website you would like, Click Here.  The internet site is a blog: Thomas A. Edison's Beautiful Failure, by Christine Adam Beckett.

With this concrete home prototype, Edison felt he held the key to urban and suburban development.  At the time the New York City slums were bursting at the seams with immigrants from every corner of the globe.

Patent filed 1908 for the single pour concrete home process
"303 North Mountain Avenue was built in 1912 with reinforced concrete.  A giant mold was erected, steel rods set in place, and floor by floor, the concrete was poured, dried, and stripped of its mold to reveal a complete house.  The process would only take a few weeks and everything could be included in the molds: even shingles, bathtubs, and picture frames.  Brennan's home features a molded concrete fireplace and a basement resembling a grotto with its arched, swooping ceiling.  A strip of wood into a molded concave groove at the edge of every room was in the original mold, to allow for carpeting installation, or in his case, hard wood floors."

Unfortunately, the concrete home was one of Edison's failures.  At the time an average home cost $4000, he sold the concrete home package for $1200.  The downfall was that the contractor had a huge investment in forms and equipment to produce the homes. A few of these prototype homes are still around in Monclair and Union, New Jersey.

July Construction Price Indices

Year-to-year, the steel producer price index (PPI) continued to decline in July, with a 6.1 percent drop compared to 2012.  However, the steel index does seem to be slowing in its decline compared to the  first half of 2013. Asphalt was down 0.8 percent, and concrete rose 3.2 percent, compared to July 2012. The lumber PPI again rose by double-digits, a streak not broken since December. It was up 11.7 percent from 2012 values.

On a month-over-month basis, lumber was down slightly, 1 percent, while the rest of the competitive materials showed marginal increases. Steel rose 0.4 percent, concrete rose 0.5 percent, and asphalt climbed the most since June at 0.7 percent.
