Chapter President Spotlight
Michael Sloan, TMA Australia Chapter President
What makes your chapter great?
From accountants to bankers, lawyers to hedge funds, we have involvement of all participants in a turnaround/restructuring involved in our chapter.
Why or how did you get involved in TMA?
An email came in from a key workout banker whilst I was on honeymoon asking me to join and for some ideas on how to improve TMA events. Much to the annoyance of my wife, I replied...
What's the most significant trend or event happening in the turnaround and restructuring industry?
The maturing of the market in Australia for distressed investing. We started a long way back due to years of uninterrupted economic growth.
What would someone who only knows you professionally be surprised to learn about you?
I was bestowed with a name in Maori by a tribe that I did work for: "Te Kotuku Rerenga Kotahi." Translated, it means the White Heron who flies in a singular path.
Michael Sloan is a partner at Ashurst LLP in Melbourne, Australia.

Chapter President Spotlight
Fedra Valencia, TMA Spain Chapter President
What makes your chapter great?
We are a new but dynamic chapter with many wishes and goals to carry out new projects. We have restructured the committees to promote the participation of our members.
Why or how did you get involved in TMA? What have you gotten out of your involvement?
I am one of the founding members of TMA Spain, which is the first association in Spain dedicated to professionals engaged in turnaround. My involvement in TMA has given me the opportunity to meet a lot of great professionals and share with them experiences and find solutions to common problems.
What's the most significant trend or event happening in the turnaround and restructuring industry?
The Spanish Insolvency Law approved in 2003 has undergone two serious modifications in 2009 and 2011, and it is about to be changed again. The first advance of the reform is already in force and promises to provide new tools to carry out the restructuring of companies.
Fedra Valencia is a member at Cuatrecasas Gonales Pereira in Madrid, Spain.

TMA Europe Distressed Investing Conference
Turnaround professionals from across Europe will be gathering in London for a leading industry event focusing on distressed investing. The third annual TMA Europe Distressed Investing Conference takes place Tuesday, 23 September. The conference is being held at Ernst & Young, 1 More London Place, from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Learn more and book online.
Leading experts will deliberate distressed loan portfolio opportunities and risk. Lively debates are promised with two panels exploring key issues including pricing, valuations, workouts, and pressures.
Lukas Fecker, of Ernst & Young Luxemburg and a member of TMA Europe's board, is one of the panelists who will be exploring sell side issues in the context of banks deleveraging their balance sheets, and workout of distressed and underperforming loans internally being moved to funds by sell-off debt portfolios.
Fecker said, "We will be looking at who is selling and what are they selling? How are debts being packaged and how is the sale process conducted, and what are the implications for turnaround and restructuring professionals? We will also be discussing whether the Asset Quality Review required by the European Union will accelerate this process and whether this will add transparency to what has been a sometimes opaque and subjective process of valuation."
Other panelists confirmed so far include John Willcock of Global Turnaround, Mathieu Roland-Billecart of Ernst & Young, and Susan Kelly of Squire Patton Boggs.
There will be a second panel debate looking at buy side topics as well as plenty of networking opportunities to enable delegates to catch up with colleagues from across the continent.
Fecker said, "Understanding what is becoming the 'new normal' in restructuring will be fundamental to the turnaround business in the coming months and years, so take this opportunity to add to your knowledge from some of the main players in the market."
