EAGLE-Net Alliance NTIA Suspension: Status Update

EAGLE-Net is continuing to work to have the temporary suspension lifted by the NTIA. With the arrival of the spring construction season, we are eager to get back to work in building the statewide broadband network. Once more information is available and the work stoppage has been lifted, we will send an updated notice.

If you have any questions, please contact your local RCR or Business Development staff member.

E-Rate Update

EAGLE-Net Alliance responded to more than 150 E-Rate requests during the 2013 application window.  Of these responses, EAGLE-Net received nearly 60 commitments from schools and libraries across the state of Colorado.  This is over a 60% increase in commitments from the 2012 season.

For more information about E-Rate, please reference the Colorado Department of Education's website.   Here is a quick summary from the CDE website about the E-Rate program:

E-Rate is administered by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) under the direction of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and provides discounts to assist most schools and libraries in the United States to obtain affordable telecommunications and Internet access. It is one of four support programs funded through a Universal Service fee charged to companies that provide interstate and/or international telecommunications services.

The Schools and Libraries Program supports connectivity - the conduit or pipeline for communications using telecommunications services and/or the Internet. Funding is requested under four categories of service: telecommunications services, Internet access, internal connections, and basic maintenance of internal connections. Discounts for support depend on the level of poverty and the urban/rural status of the population served and range from 20% to 90% of the costs of eligible services. Eligible schools, school districts and libraries may apply individually or as part of a consortium.

We are pleased with the response and thank all of the entities who have made commitments to EAGLE-Net.

Weld County School District RE-1 Looking Forward to Significant Cost Savings

Weld County School District RE-1 Superintendent and EAGLE-Net board member, Dr. Jo Barbie, recently announced at the March EAGLE-Net Board of Directors meeting that her school district will be increasing their broadband bandwidth next year with EAGLE-Net service at a substantially reduced costs.

The school district will increase their bandwidth from their current 50 Mbps connection to a 100 Mbps connection starting in July 2013.  With the new contract, they will also experience a 75% reduction in cost from the previous year.  Superintendent Barbie is thrilled with the new contract that will deliver twice the bandwidth at a substantial savings from their current contract.  She is currently working with her staff to determine the best way to reinvest those cost savings into their technology program to better help students and staff in their educational endeavors.

Weld County School District RE-1 also receives e-Rate funding for their telecommunications expenses which further reduces their overall cost.

Questions from the RoadEAGLE-Net Logo Small

Where are the connection points for the current EAGLE-Net network?

A map of the network, as currently built, is shown on our website along with a list of community anchor institutions. Points of interconnect at each CAI are available upon request.

When will the remaining segments of the network be built and available for service?

Soon after the suspension of award is lifted by the NTIA, EAGLE-Net will release a new construction build schedule identifying network segments to be completed in 2013 with estimated completion dates.  The schedule will also include the completion of the construction work that began in 2012.

Trends in Training and Education

Public Universities to Offer Free Online Classes for Credit

An article published early this year in the New York Times highlights a new partnership between many public universities and a commercial company to offer MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) in an effort to expand on the new trends in educational technology and distance learning.  These MOOCs are introductory classes that are not only free, but now available for college credit, offered to anyone worldwide.  Once a student has completed the introductory MOOC they will then be required to pay tuition to complete the degree program, called MOOC2Degree.

Arizona State, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Arkansas are all planning to take part in this program and, "while [they expect] the program to expand to a wide range of associate, bachelor's and graduate programs, many of the initial offerings would be in professional-development programs, like those leading to a master's in education or a bachelor of science in nursing."

There are many benefits for all parties involved and this represents further growth in training and education through online learning.
