A Glimpse into the Life of Child Welfare Caseworkers and Supervisors

Below are three articles, which were written by child welfare caseworkers and supervisors. You'll read about their challenges, as well as the meaningful and special parts of their jobs that drive them to come to work every day.

What's New in Adult Learning?  Part Two: Pre-Training Activities for Trainers

Linda Julian, OCWTP Trainer

As the Ohio Child Welfare Training Program (OCWTP) continues to update the Training of Trainers (TOT) series of curriculum we are exploring ways to maximize the use of classroom learning time. We realize that prospective trainers, like most of us, have busy lives and numerous work and family responsibilities to balance. So, in an effort to respect the learners' time, we are contemplating ways to make better use of the classroom time and to reserve classroom time for activities that need to be conducted in the classroom.

Completion of the OCWTP Learning Outline and Review Forms: The Inside Story

As part of our process to insure the OCWTP learnings are relevant, reflect best practice, and continue to meet the Ohio Counselor Social Work Marriage & Family Therapist (OCSWMFT) Board requirements as an approved provider for Social Work and/or Counselor CEUs, it's necessary that we have the OCWTP Learning Outline and Review Form completed in total.

Child Welfare Opiate Engagement Project

The fiscal and human impact of opiate addiction is high with long lasting implications for children and families. The Child Welfare Opiate Engagement project is a group of stakeholder groups that came together to develop a shared understanding of the impact of opiate addiction on the Ohio child welfare system. They met over the last seven months to study the nature and scope of the problem, to look at best practice standards for addressing the issue, and to develop a set of recommendations for system change and policy development.

We hope you will take time to review the white paper describing the results of the committee's work including recommendations for training, expansion of family dependency treatment courts, prioritized access to treatment options, increased accessibility to medication assisted treatment, and intensive case management with parent mentors.
Foster Care Alumni Corner
Introducing Kevin Hofmann

Charlotte Osterman, Institute for Human Services

Most young people we've introduced as trainers in the Ohio Child Welfare Training Program (OCWTP) have spent a significant number of years in foster care. Very few were adopted. Kevin Hofmann has traveled both roads on his child welfare journey.

Trainer To-Do's
Swap out old VHS tapes for DVDs

It's time to convert your VHS tapes to DVDs or embed your video onto your laptop. The majority of training sites can no longer accommodate VHS. If you have any questions, call IHS or an RTC. Thank you for your cooperation!
