2013/2014 Budget Announcement

The PVS Board is happy to share with you that we have passed our 2013/2014 budget.

We are very proud of the work done by Mr. Berg and the Finance Committee on this year's budget. Mr. Berg has been very conservative in spending this year and we have carried those savings into next year's budget.

Our overall operating budget will include increased support for a number of line items.

Women at work!

Last Thursday, the 7th and 8th grade girls attended the Oregon Women in Trades Career Fair. This hands-on learning experience was a day for Oregon middle school girls to experience non-traditional women's careers. The girls were open-minded and wanted to participate in everything -- we wish we'd been there longer!

Our girls experienced activities such as operating a crane, fixing a water main, riding in a bucket truck and working with an overhead power line. We learned about the training and skills necessary for trades careers -- as well as the paychecks! The girls each came home with a metal plaque on which they'd welded their own initials.

Bike and Walk Challenge Month

We are halfway through Bike and Walk Challenge Month and doing great.  We had participation from almost every room in both buildings last week.

Look for tally sheets outside your classroom doors or let your teacher know how you got to school.  If you have to drive, consider arriving early enough to park a few blocks away and walk the rest.  In the spirit of "Drive Less, Move More" this counts as a "walk."

There will be an awards ceremony at NE Sunday Parkways June 23rd. Let's see if PVS can place!

We are currently ranked third place in the city for overall participation level:  25% of our students have made at least one trip to school by foot or bike!  Way to go!  These are preliminary results as some schools haven't entered their data yet.  To keep our ranking we'll need to keep that participation level high.

Drive Less, Move More, feel great when you get to school!

7th & 8th Grade Boys' Trades Day at PVS

On Thursday, while the 7th and 8th grade girls were away at their trades fair, the boys had their own trades fair here at PVS.  Ben Brizuela led workshops on bicycle repair and auto maintenance, while Glen Bean led hands-on demonstrations of flux-core welding and woodworking hand tools.

The day ended with Games with Ms. Kennedy and salsa making with Maestra Alex.

Thank you to Ms. Kennedy and Maestra Alex for their extra efforts and special thanks go to Glen Bean and Ben Brizuela for volunteering their time and expertise to make the day a fun and informative learning experience for our boys!

Starry Night: Early Reporting

Thank you to everyone who attended, donated time or money, or otherwise contributed to Portland Village School's spring fundraiser, "Starry Night"!

We had a great time Saturday night.  The decoration team transformed the basketball gym into a gracefully canopied space crowned by our old - but newly-bejeweled - giant turnip!  Many attendees went all-out on their outfits, and there was a flash mob "Walk Like an Egyptian" that will be talked about for ages!

Our initial receipts are looking very solid, which is great news.

Thank You For the Volunteer Support at Kenton Street Fair Sunday May 19th

I want to thank the parent (and student) volunteers who dedicated time on Sunday during the Kenton Street Fair in a PVS Booth, where we shared school information with interested passers by.

It was a well run event, and increased our name familiarity with families and businesses in  the Kenton Neighborhood.

Special thanks to Ethan Medley, Kirsten Rayhawk, Carie Weisenbach-Folz, Ben Brizuela, Chris Seymour, Sherry O'Connor, Lisa Kimball, Greta Kimball, and Jessi Herbert.
