Welcome to our new, mobile-friendly design of The VCS Voice.  In this summer issue we recap graduation, kick-off a new referral contest and share updates on some new things we have planned for the 2015-2016 school year.  It's going to be a great one!

Graduation Highlights

Thirty of fifty-two VCS 2015 graduates traveled to Circleville, Ohio to take part in their graduation ceremony, Saturday afternoon May 30, at 1:00 p.m. The event took place at Ohio Christian University and our grads' families all agreed that the venue was wonderful.

"There was no way I was going to miss this," shared a very excited Rylee Greene from Bexley, a third year student at VCS. "I came to VCS as a sophomore and just planned to stay the one year, but I ended up completing high school here because it just worked best for me!"  Rylee plans to start college at Mt. Vernon Nazarene University this fall.

There were many smiles as the seniors met in the morning to walk through their graduation practice.  It was the first time many of them had met face to face.  Senior Class Advisor Heidi Anderson, who teaches  English IV was also on had taking additional photos that were added to the senior slide presentation, shown later during the ceremony.

 Andrew Backs, 2015 Class
 Valedictorian, addresses
 his fellow graduates.

When the official ceremony began, the processional ended with thirty graduates, clad in royal blue and white graduation gowns, spanning the length of the Ohio Christian University gymnasium.
High School Principal Denny Hammond welcomed friend, family, staff and students.  He then introduced Mae Altman, VCS Alumae (Class of 2012), who gave this year's
graduation address.

Miss Altman spoke of having a personal vision and finding the passion and discipline to pursue that vision.  She challenged the graduates to do the same, sharing that their success in managing their own education in an online environment was a good first step.

After this, Mr. Hammond introduced the 2015 Class Valedictorian, Andrew Backs, who addressed the graduates. "If someone asked you what you would consider to be the most important part of a good education, what would you answer," Andrew questioned the graduates.  "To me, the most important skill gained from our education is the ability to think for yourself.  If your education so far has taught you to ask more questions and pursue true understanding of the

world around you, then you have received a good education. " Backs, already a student at Kent State University, will receive his Associate's Degree of Applied Science this December.   He plans to continue at Kent State University pursuing a degree in Cyber Security.

Following this, Emma Scheetz, the class Salutatorian addressed the graduates and audience with a recorded video speech, since she was unable to attend the graduation ceremony. Emma shared her opinion of the true qualities of success in life: creativity, diversity and unity. Emma, an avid flutist, plans to pursue a degree in art history, after completing a European art tour next year.

Chris Hauer (right), a four-year VCS student, receives his diploma from VCS Board President Mr. Daryl Albrecht.
It was then time for conferring diplomas to the members of this year's graduating class.  As each name was announced, VCS school board President, Mr. Daryl Albrecht handed each graduate his/her diploma.

The ceremony concluded with VCS Superintendent Mr. Jeff Nelson addressing the graduates.  "For most of you, this is the first significant accomplishment in your life's journey.  It is a moment in time and we are pleased that we can be a part of it," he shared. "But it is one of many significant moments you will have.  Enjoy it while it lasts, but go out and make many, many more!"

All in all, the beautiful sunny day was a fitting conclusion to each graduates' educational journey.

We wish all our graduates the very best of luck in all their future endeavors.  Congratulations Class of 2015!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT:  Nathan and Evangeline Brown

The chief reason why most families choose online education for their children is personal flexibility.  For the Brown family, flexibility meant the ability to complete school work from Santa Cruz, Bolivia!  In this month's Student Spotlight, we are excited to introduce you to Nathan and Eva Brown.

Nathan, who recently graduated from VCS, and Eva who will finish up this next year, have been educated at either private Christian schools or private missionary schools since they began their schooling.  Before coming to VCS, their state-side school was New Hope Christian (one of VCS's Success Sites), and their Bolivian school was an international school where the children of other missionaries and US expatriates also attend.

Mike and Donna Brown, with their children Evangeline and Nathan in Santa Cruz, Bolivia

Father, Mike, and mother, Donna, who is also a registered nurse, have served in Bolivia almost since they entered the mission field in 1986.  The family serves local Bolivians in many ways.  They meet with families and work to strengthen the local churches in this region by providing pastoral training, program support and coordination, humanitarian support in times of crisis and assistance in building projects.  As a nurse, Donna has provided medical consultation and worked in local orphanages, helping care for abandoned children.   In all, the provincial area in which they serve is home to approximately 2 million native Bolivians.

Raising their children with against the backdrop of both the American and Bolivian cultures has had both challenges and rich rewards.  Since they were infants, both Nathan and Eva have had friends of virtually every ethnic and national origin.  In addition to the indigenous peoples, others who are serving for WGM come from all over the globe.  The lifestyle is second-nature to both Nathan and Eva, and has given them both experiences which solidified their appreciation and acceptance of cultural diversity, which, the family says, has strengthened their faith as Christian believers.

But it wasn't until the family made their next-to-last return to the states just before last year, they were forced to make a new decision relative to their children's' education.  New Hope did not provide education past the eighth grade.  "I didn't really want to go to public school my last year of school," explains Nathan.  "I didn't like the idea of being exposed to something that was really completely different than what I was used to.  I needed to focus on my grades and not be distracted, and of course  flexibility was the most important thing."

The Brown family learned of VCS and decided to give home schooling a try.  Nathan and Eva started off at a local success site in Circleville, Crossroads Christian, in order to help their children make the transition.  Crossroads provided a class tutor to meet with VCS students and help them stay on track.  Shortly after the new year, Nathan and Eva returned to Bolivia again, this time taking their schooling with them.  They are again home this summer, but expect to return again to Bolivia this fall.

In addition to helping his family, Nathan is an avid juggler.  He says he picked up an interest as a young child and is pretty-much self taught.  He can now juggle five objects, including balls and pins, and says it is a skills that has given him the ability to relate to children and families in Bolivia.

Nathan has already been accepted to Olivette Nazarene University in Bourbonnaise, Illinois, south of Chicago.  He plans to study in the field of computer science, but beyond that, he is not sure where his studies may take him.  Nathan's other passion is culinary arts.  "My favorite is baking and pastry arts," he admits, as he shows off a photo album with some of his creations.  They are beautiful!

Eva is the quieter sibling.  She has a keen interest in the arts and enjoys painting and drawing.  Eva says she prefers older, "realist" paintings, as opposed to modern art, as she recognizes far more talent in the former.  Her favorite artists are the masters, including Michelangelo.  Eva also enjoys playing the guitar and hopes to improve her playing over time.  She just received a new guitar for a recent birthday present.

As far as her future goes, Eva is thinking about studying art at the post-secondary level, but is also considering Japanese.  She is completing a conversational Japanese course in her spare time.  "I've always had a real interest in the Japanese culture and really want to travel there sometime in my future," Eva shares.

Nathan, we wish you the best of luck at Olivette Nazarene this fall; and Eva, we look forward to helping make your senior year a memorable one at VCS.

Remember, our first day of school will be Tuesday, August 18th.  Can't wait to see you online!

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
