You asked for them... You've got them!

In May 2014, on our year-end school survey,  many of you shared that you wished we would offer more student activities or clubs that appealed to students' interests.

Last year we had only four clubs.  This year we have seven!

Are you interested in Cooking?  Peforming Arts? Photography?  Fitness?  Graphic Design?   Government?  The Bible?  We now have clubs that can put you in connection with others who share your passion.

You can find more information and reach our to our club advisors on our new website under the 'Student Services' section, or click above.

In future issues of The VCS Voice, we hope to share upcoming news and events from our clubs.

Student Spotlight:  Tarik Verasso

If you ask Tarik Verasso, 17 what he hopes to

do this year, in addition to graduating, he will tell you he hopes to make a difference.  And Tarik is in a unique position to do it.

Tarik was recently appointed to the Newark Youth Leadership Council.  The group is comprised of fourteen teens who meet once a month to assist the city in implementing or validating programs that concern the Newark's youth.

NYLC members sit in the council chambers when they meet and have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of city government.

Right now the council is reviewing traffic patterns and resulting issues on 21st street, a retail strip north of Hwy 16, known for congestion.

Tarik was nominated as a representative to serve on the council by VCS tutors Patricia Kelly and Shannon Yeakley.  "Working with Tarik, Patty and I felt that he would be most likely to have a positive impact and to take this role seriously," shares Mrs. Yeakley.  "He is currently taking his U.S. Government course, so we also felt that his involvement would directly relate to his coursework."

Before being selected, Tarik had to submit an application locally indicating why he thought he would be a good candidate to serve in this role.  He was accepted  and sworn-in, along with the other 13 members at the start of the school year.

Congratulations for supporting your community and serving in this very important role, Tarik!
