Field trip to Blacklick Woods Metro Park

On Monday, students in grades K-6 visited the Blacklick Woods Metro Park. They took an educational tram ride around the park. They were accompanied by the park naturalist, Diana. She spoke about the many types of plants and animals found in the park as well as, the park history. The families enjoyed their picnic lunches and visited with teachers. Students really liked the playground, along with playing frisbee and tag!

May Tech Talk - Turning in your computers?
|

Tech Question #1: I'm about to graduate from VCS this spring. Where do I turn in my computer? Great question and congratulations on your graduation! We are very proud of you! To answer your question, I have two answers.
A. If you are coming to graduation, you can bring your computer to the graduation ceremony. We will be able to take it there.
B. If you are not going to the graduation ceremony, then you will need to contact the "Help Desk" at 1-866-501-9473 ext. 6 to make arrangements.
Tech Question #2: I'm not going to take summer school this summer. Do I need to turn in my computer over summer break? Great question! VCS summer program is a great way to catch up or work ahead on your graduation credits. But to answer your question, no you do not have to turn in your computer over the summer break.

| VCS reapplying for School Improvement Grant |
VCS is in the process of reapplying for the third year of the School Improvement Grant. Each year we have to reapply for the grant and provide evidence to the Ohio Department of Education that we are implementing reading and math programs to increase student achievement. The District Leadership Team (DLT) feels very confident that VCS will be awarded the grant for the third and final year. Improving student achievement and our instructional practices are our two main goals with this year's SIG work. One focus during second semester is providing a variety of opportunities for Extend Learning Time. Examples of this include our Mathy Monday program and the Dreambox Learning competition which you can read more about in this newsletter.

| Student Spotlight: Eccelsia Wilburn |
 Eccelsia Wilburn
Grade 8 From Pataskala
What is your favorite thing about VCS? That they have a learning center at COSI were we can meet different people, go on field trips and get help from different teachers if we need it.
What is your favorite subject? Spanish because I get to learn a new language. I also like that I get to learn something new everyday.
What do you want to be when you grow up? When I grow up I would like to work in the business field. If that doesn't work out for me then I would love to become a singer.
What do you like to do in your free time? I like to play outside with my friends and family, read the bible, watch TV and most of all go shopping.
What is your favorite movie? My favorite movie is the Tyler Perry movie called "Daddy's little girls". I like it so much because I'm a girly girl and I love chick flicks.
What is your favorite book? My favorite book is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.
Do you have any siblings? Oh yes I do..... I have 2 twin brothers Judah and Joseph(18), an older brother Leroy(17), an older sister Joanna(16),a little sister Bethany (known as Grace)(13) and my little brother Christian(12). All together that's six children not including me.
What is your favorite food? My favorite food is Mexican food. I like it because I love spicy food. YUM!!
Why did you choose VCS versus a traditional school? I choose VCS because at my old school I wasn't do so well so I thought that I should just be homeschooled to see how I do.

| Teacher Spotlight: Mrs. Young |
Mrs. Young teaches high school social studies
What is your favorite thing about VCS? The fact that we provide an opportunity for students that, otherwise might not graduate if they had to attend a brick and mortar school.
What do you want your students to accomplish while they attend VCS? As a teacher, the one thing I want ALL of my students to be able to do when they complete my class, is to walk away with an ability and desire to THINK. If they learn how to find and evaluate information, and form their own opinions and ideas, then I feel I am giving them a tool that they will use for the rest of their lives.
What advice do you want to pass on to your students? Stumbling blocks are a part of life. Don't let them stop you from chasing your dreams or achieving your goals.

Food: My mom's home made noodles
Book: "Bag of Bones" by Stephen King
Movie: "The Bucket List"
TV Show: Criminal Minds
Hobby/Interest: I love football (my son plays for the University of Findlay...Go Oilers!), spending time with my 3 children and my grandson, Zumbra, and hiking.
Season: Spring
Vacation Destination: Topsail Island, NC
Childhood Memory: My family and I used to load up about twice a summer in the back of my dad's old pick up truck and go into town for ice cream after working in the tobacco fields. There was nothing like the feel of the wind whipping around our heads as we held on tight to keep from bouncing out of the back. The work we did as a family and laughing with my brother and sisters every time we hit a bump on that old country road are things I'll cherish for the rest of my life.
