Prepare For Worship
First Sunday in Lent
Collect:
O Lord God, You led Your ancient people through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land. Guide the people of Your Church that following our Savior we may walk through the wilderness of this world toward the glory of the world to come; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
- Deuteronomy 26:1-11
- Romans 10:8b-13
- Luke 4:1-13
Jesus Christ Is Our Champion Against the Devil
Jesus Christ, our Champion against the devil, endures and overcomes "every temptation" (Luke 4:13) on our behalf. He worships the Lord His God, and serves Him only by trusting the Word of His Father: "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased" (Luke 3:22). Jesus' victory is now ours through His gracious Word, which is not far away but near us - in our mouth and in our heart, in the proclamation of repentance and faith. For "with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved" (Rom. 10:10). Our confession of Christ includes the prayer of faith, which is not disappointed; "for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Rom. 10:13). The Lord is not oblivious to "our affliction, our toil, and our oppression" (Deut. 26:7), but has mercy upon us. He has brought us out of bondage through the "signs and wonders" of Holy Baptism, "with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm" (Deut. 26:8), and now He leads us by His Spirit even in the wilderness.

 Prayers
For Hanna Edel, daughter of Rev. Ken and Claudia Edel, who will undergo surgery at the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton the end of February for removal of a tumor. For the family of Rev. John Nielsen as they mourn his death, that they may be comforted by the promises of our Saviour and the hope of the resurrection. Rev. Nielsen was called to his heavenly home last Friday.
+ It has pleased Almighty God, in His divine wisdom and providence, to call to Himself the soul of John Nielsen. At the request of the family, the service will be Wednesday at 11:00 am at Foothills, with interment in the early afternoon. +

Some of my friends don't know who Jesus is!
|
For many Canadians, the real Jesus is unknown; or His name used in vain; or considered just a figure from history. Knowing where to start talking about Jesus will be the focus of a workshop at Lutheran Church-Canada's first-ever national outreach conference, Reach Out Canada (ROC) in Winnipeg July 5-7 will help you navigate the many-paths mindset.

National Pastors' & Deacons' Conference
Questions have arisen about who may attend the National Conference and who must attend this conference(Oct 28-31, Calgary, AB). As with District Pastors' & Deacons' Conferences, rostered pastors and deacons are required to attend (whether active, candidate or emeritus). If you are unable to attend, you must send a written excuse to the District President who in the case of a national conference, will send a copy to President Bugbee. Non-rostered workers may attend but are not required to attend. New this year is a registration fee of $75 for all attendees as noted in the letter from President Bugbee which was sent out to all church workers.
