Prepare For Worship

Twenty-fifth Sunday after Pentecost

Collect:

O Lord, by Your bountiful goodness release us from the bonds of our sins, which by reason of our weakness we have brought upon ourselves, that we may stand firm until the day of our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

  • Daniel 12:1-3
  • Hebrews 10:11-25
  • Mark 13:1-13

The Crucified and Risen Body of Christ Jesus Is the True Temple of God

Despite its "wonderful stones" and "great buildings," the Jerusalem temple would be torn down, not one stone left upon another; just as this present world and its kingdoms will come to an end (Mark 13:1-8). But that temple pointed beyond itself to Christ, to His sacrifice upon the Cross, and to the resurrection of His Body as the true Temple of God. In the midst of sin and death, by the proclamation of the Gospel, He now gathers disciples into His Body, wherein "the one who endures to the end will be saved" (Mark 13:10-13). For He is "a great priest over the house of God," who "will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more." By the pure water of His Baptism, they "draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith," and by His flesh and blood they enter the Holy of Holies (Heb. 10:17-22). Thus are His people delivered, "everyone whose name shall be found written in the book." For by the wisdom of His Gospel, He turns "many to righteousness," so that "many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake" to everlasting life (Dan 12:1-3).

Pastor's Desk Diary 2013

-- via Canadian Lutheran Online

ST. CATHARINES, Ontario - Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary is again pleased to offer to the church the annual pastor's desk diary. It contains readings from the three-year and one-year lectionaries, including variants for the major Lutheran churches in Canada: Lutheran Church-Canada, Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, and Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The original work of Thrivent Financial in the United States of America has been adapted to the Canadian calendar.

Although the seminary can no longer offer the diary for free, the cost has been kept to $19 (plus shipping and GST) through the support of advertising. The diary is available though lulu.ca, an online, print-on-demand service. Order the diary online by searching it on lulu.ca or by following this direct link: http://www.lulu.com/shop/concordia-lutheran-theological-seminary/lutheran-pastors-desk-diary-2013/paperback/product-20487037.html. The diary will be shipped directly to you.

Base shipping cost in Canada is $5.99, but there are quantity discounts available-a good incentive for pastors and church workers to order together.

Do Lutherans read the Bible?

ONLINE - The Discipleship Task Force Committee of Lutheran Church-Canada (LCC) asks LCC members to take its survey on Bible reading. The purpose of the survey is to paint a broad picture of individual and group Bible study in LCC congregations, identify obstacles to daily Bible reading, and brainstorm resources to encourage Bible reading among LCC members...  The full article also has a link to  a brief PowerPoint presentation "highlighting the importance of Bible reading in the Christian's life" as well as information for printing and mailing in the survey.

Broken: 7 "Christian" Rules That Every Christian Ought to Break as Often as Possible

Real Answers - Real Religion - Real Holy Spirituality

There are only two kinds of spirituality in the world. One is false, and one is true. One is the manifestation of the old evil foe who has sent many false spiritualties out into the world, and the other is the holy spirituality found only in faith in the one true God. One is a lie, and one is real.

But which is which?

There is a cultural perfect storm shredding the spiritual landscape of the United States. It travels on the wind of a growing ignorance of both history and the Bible. Christians are losing faith because the kind of Christianity they are trying to believe is BROKEN
