Western Canada Sexual Assault Initiative
Representatives from the western provinces met in Calgary in June. L-R: BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba
EVA BC is part of a 2-year collaborative project between BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to ensure there are consistent and improved responses to sexual assault across the four western provinces.  Each province will address its own priorities, but all developed resources resulting from the project will be shared among the group.

Regional representatives from front-line service agencies in Kelowna, Kitimat, Prince George, Surrey and Victoria will be serving on EVA BC's Advisory Committee for the project. Funding for the initiative is being provided by Status of Women Canada.

Shashi Assanand
Wins YWCA Women of Distinction Award

Shashi Assanand, the executive director of Vancouver & Lower Mainland Multicultural Family Support Service Society, was recently awarded a YWCA Women of Distinction Award in the category of Community Building.

A refugee herself, Shashi has dedicated the last 40 years to empowering immigrant and visible minority women so they can thrive in Canadian society.  Her vision and initiative led to the development of a unique model of services for immigrant and refugee women dealing with family violence.

Congratulations, Shashi, from all your friends and colleagues in the anti-violence sector!

The incredible success of our Be More Than a Bystander initiative just keeps growing! As we continue to track the publicity reach of the campaign, we crossed the 100 million mark in its 4th year, bringing our conservative estimates of total views or impressions to 116 million by May 31st, 2014.

The popular youth education component reached close to 15,000 students in 2014, bringing the number of youth reached in-person throughout the province by BC Lions spokespersons to 44,000 since the program began.

BC Lions have also participated in a number of related events, such as the Men's Leadership Breakfast organized by Tamitik Status of Women Association in Kitimat earlier this year.

L-R: Tamitik staff Debbie Dilg, Children Who Witness Abuse Counsellor; Cheryl Rumley, Stopping the Violence Counselling & Outreach Programs; and Linda Slanina, Executive Director; along with Travis Lulay and Rolly Lumbala of the BC Lions.
