CYRM Reading Challenge Results!

A HUGE congratulations to the fabulous Mustangs who completed the CYRM challenge issued by the Meadows library this year. Every year our students, along with students throughout the Golden State, participate in the California Young Reader Medal (CYRM) Award through picture books read aloud in the library and then vote on their favorites, much like a Kids Choice award for books.
This year Mrs. Primm issued a challenge to our fourth and fifth graders to participate in the novel category by reading the three nominated books on their own time. The response was overwhelming!!! Fifty-nine students read all three books, over 1,000 pages, and were eligible to vote at our lunchtime party.
And what a party it was.... 59 eager students, PTA volunteers, Ms. Whitt and one proud librarian gathered to eat pizza, vote, and comment on their favorite book. Stop in the library this week to see the comments the students scrawled - everything from "good book" to "speechless" to "greatest ending in the entire universe."
Students are already looking forward to next year's challenge!!

Grades of Green Earth Tip!
Use rechargeable batteries. You would have to use hundreds of single-use batteries to equal the energy you get from ONE rechargeable battery. And be sure to recycle all batteries when they can no longer be used!

You can easily drop off used batteries at the Meadows front office - there is a basket there just waiting for those batteries!  The Meadows PTA then recycles these batteries at a recycling center.  Thanks for doing your part for the Earth!
Save the date- April 16, 9 AM, Goodyear Airfield in Carson- High Altitude Weather Balloon launch!
Mrs. Michael was awarded the Teachers Driving Innovation grant in January to do a high-altitude weather balloon (HAB) launch with Meadows students. The "ground crew" team of K-5 students have been working hard, and it's time to launch! We would like to invite the Meadows community to our balloon launch on
Saturday, April 16th. We will begin readying the payload around 8:30 AM, to release the balloon promptly at 9 AM on the Goodyear Airfield (where the Goodyear Blimp is moored, just off of the 405 freeway).

What is a HAB launch? A weather balloon will be inflated with helium, and attached to a "payload", which is a Styrofoam box with cameras, GPS, and student created experiments. A HAM-radio transmitter will be included to show precise locations, to assist in recovering the payload hours later. Our goal is for the payload to reach 100,000 feet, allowing for some absolutely incredible video and still camera footage, before the balloon bursts and falls back to Earth.

Once the balloon is off of the ground, we are planning some "viewing parties" to watch the balloon's GPS transmitter move across Southern California. You'll be able to see exactly where the balloon is, and where it has landed, from the comfort of your own home or neighborhood.  Some of our ground crew students will be available to answer questions and tell stories for those not able to make it to the launch. Make a full day of it, surrounded by Meadows families, and watching science unfold in front of you! If you are interested in hosting a party in your home/backyard/street, let Mrs. Michael know at jmichael@mbusd.org, stop by the science lab, or leave a note in her box.
