Mother Son Game Night
What a fun night for Meadows Moms and Sons!  We had record breaking attendance last Friday night when 230 moms and sons came dressed in their favorite sports team gear ready to play! Everyone enjoyed basketball, foosball, other games and of course epic rounds of laser tag!

A big thank you to our two Co-Chairs of the event: Cynthia Hedges and Dana Bagdasarian

Rinaldi's supplied yummy food plus we had  tasty donuts from Krispy Kreme.  A shout out to Ann Lundy/Mattel for donating many great raffle prizes and to Becker's Bakery for the free cookie raffle prizes.  Thank you too to the various parent/family volunteers who helped with check-in, served dinner, made popcorn, took photos etc.  Overall it was a super fun night!

Go Team Meadows!
Summer Camp Expo
The 2016 Camp Expo was a huge hit!  This past Saturday, hundreds of South Bay families visited booths from 40+ camps to get information on fun and educational options for the summer.  Meadows Elementary hosts this event every year and it is a wonderful resource for the community.  We also featured Bike Safety Training, a bicycle skills course and a Happy Wall!  Thank you to the Beach Cities Cycling Club, the South Bay Bicycle Coalition as well as the Manhattan Beach Police department.  Yummy food was provided by El Gringo, Fresh Brothers Pizza and Kona Ice.  The mayor of Manhattan Beach even stopped by!

A huge thank you to Andrea McCracken and her team of volunteers for organizing a great Camp Expo for 2016 - your hard work is much appreciated.

50's Dress-Up Day & Assembly
This Friday, March 25th, all students will see a wonderful assembly by 1950's-inspired doo-wop group, "The Alley Cats." Let's have fun with this and dress up like cool cats! Girls: poodle skirts, saddle shoes, bobby socks, capris and flats, neck scarves. Boys: letter sweaters, greaser jeans and jackets, fedora hats and skinny ties. Mustangs will rock around the clock!
Grades of Green Earth Tip!

Get Outside! Hitting the beach (and noticing the amount of trash that's everywhere), going to Polliwog Park or hiking in the mountains is a great way to help your kids connect to Mother Nature and remind them why it is so important to go green every day.

Save the date- April 16, 9 AM, Goodyear Airfield in Carson- High Altitude Weather Balloon launch!
book-stacks-colorful.jpg
Mrs. Michael was awarded the Teachers Driving Innovation grant in January to do a high-altitude weather balloon (HAB) launch with Meadows students. The "ground crew" team of K-5 students have been working hard, and it's time to launch! We would like to invite the Meadows community to our balloon launch on Saturday, April 16th. We will begin readying the payload around 8:30 AM, to release the balloon promptly at 9 AM on the Goodyear Airfield (where the Goodyear Blimp is moored, just off of the 405 freeway).

What is a HAB launch? A weather balloon will be inflated with helium, and attached to a "payload", which is a Styrofoam box with cameras, GPS, and student created experiments. A HAM-radio transmitter will be included to show precise locations, to assist in recovering the payload hours later. Our goal is for the payload to reach 100,000 feet, allowing for some absolutely incredible video and still camera footage, before the balloon bursts and falls back to Earth.

Once the balloon is off of the ground, we are planning some "viewing parties" to watch the balloon's GPS transmitter move across Southern California. You'll be able to see exactly where the balloon is, and where it has landed, from the comfort of your own home or neighborhood.  Some of our ground crew students will be available to answer questions and tell stories for those not able to make it to the launch. Make a full day of it, surrounded by Meadows families, and watching science unfold in front of you! If you are interested in hosting a party in your home/backyard/street, let Mrs. Michael know at jmichael@mbusd.org, stop by the science lab, or leave a note in her box.
CYRM Reading Challenge - 4th & 5th Grade
