Adopt a Family - Today is Collection Day Dec 15th
presents.jpg In the Meadows' tradition we are collecting gifts this holiday season for the homeless families at Harbor Interfaith Shelter. Every year we love the message that this collection sends to the children about the joy of giving. Your teacher's room parent already sent out the information to all class families. Send in gifts with the UNIT number, GENDER and AGE of the child who will be receiving it. Drop gifts off in class from December 7th - 15th.  Thank you for your support!
Student of the Month
Congratulations to Julia Barile for being honored as STUDENT OF THE MONTH in November by the Manhattan Beach Coordinating Council.

MBUSD logo B&W
In the next few weeks, MBUSD is hosting...The Mathematical Mind: Grade Level Sessions
12/15 daytime Grade 2 (8:30-10) & Grade 5 (10:30-12)
12/16 daytime Grade 1 (8:30-10) Grade 4 (10:30-12)
"This series of workshops is designed for parents to understand what their children will be learning by grade level. Connections will be made between what students are learning in the classroom and how parents can support mathematics learning at home. The December sessions will focus on what parents can do to help at home, and the sessions after the New Year will focus on the purpose of what students are learning in class."
If you are not able to attend, all sessions will  also be streamed live and recorded to watch at your convenience.  To watch online, go to the MBUSD website, select the drop down menu for Parents, and click on the Parent Workshops link.  There, you can find the workshops schedule as well as the link to the LiveStream site where you can view the session live or prerecorded.

Survey Help - Due December 18th
In 2011, the MB elementary schools we were successful in receiving grant funding for improvements to provide safety enhancements at each school. Each year we are required by the City to complete a school survey that counts the number of students arriving and departing to/from school by various travel modes (walk, bike, bus, car, etc.) and a parent survey intended to collect information about how their children travel to and from school. The survey is supposed to be completed twice a year. Here is a link to the first online survey. It's a quick one! Your responses are appreciated!

MBEF - Time for Giving!
When you count your blessings this holiday season, consider the outstanding education your child is receiving at our MBUSD schools as one of them. Despite one of the lowest funding levels in the country, Manhattan Beach has managed to remain one of the top districts in the state because of community support. The generous support of parents like you helps us to fund programs that inspire learning, enrich teaching, and promote innovation and academic excellence in our public schools. Please remember MBEF during this season of holiday giving!

SAVE HOLIDAY TISSUE PAPER FOR YAA
Our January YAA project, Masks of Mexico, is right around the corner.  Students will make paper mache masks using colorful tissue paper and other supplies.  We ask that you please save tissue paper over the holidays and place them in a collection box that will be outside of the Meadows office when we return to school after winter break.  Any tissue paper will work - even if it's ripped, crumbled, patterned or solid.

Thanks and happy holidays!
Grades of Green
Personalize your gifts and save a ton of wrapping paper (a.k.a. TREES) with these fun alternative coverings:

1. Fabric, which can be knotted, pinned, or tied with a ribbon.
2. A clay pot; if it comes with a drip tray, you can use that as a lid and secure with ribbon.
3. Newspaper, paper bags, maps and calendars.

And don't forget to hang onto tissue paper from gift bags! You can use it again, or bring it to Meadows and drop it in a special collection box after the break;  it will be used in a special Young At Art project.
Attention 4th and 5th Grade Readers!
book-stacks-colorful.jpg
Team Meadows is issuing a challenge to all fourth and fifth grade readers to participate in the California Young Reader Medal (CYRM) Award voting for intermediate novels.  This years novels are Wildwood, A Dog called Homeless, and True..Sort of.  Students must commit to independently read all three novels by late March.  After each book is read, students need to come to the library and fill out a completion form so that Mrs. Primm can monitor your progress.  Students who complete the challenge will be invited to the library for a Voting Party to discuss and vote for their favorite.  Books are available in the Meadows Library, in the Manhattan Beach Public Library, and at the Book Fair.
Please let Mrs. Primm know that you have accepted the challenge.
