MBEF PLEDGE DAY IS COMING....

 

MBEF Pledge Day is Thursday, 11/7.  Thank you to the families who have already donated to the Annual Appeal.  We look to you, our amazing Meadows families, to reach 100% participation.  MBEF pays for teachers - 70 in grades K-12 this year. Every donation matters, and every donor is important.  If you haven't donated already, please consider donating to MBEF on or before November 7.  And please stop by an MBEF table for coffee - compliments of TWO GUNS Espresso - and pick up a yard sign. Mbef.org/Givetoday

November 13th  PTA Evening Meeting:
Common Core - A Major Shift In Education
  

Carolyn Seaton, the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Manhattan Beach, will share the new direction California's Common Core Standards are taking educators, parents, and students.  The biggest shift in educational philosophy and practice is on our door step and presents an exciting opportunity to better prepare our students for the 21st Century and success beyond K-12 education.  Join us at 6:30 pm on November 13th in Room 21 for a thoughtful presentation and discussion of what the new standards contain, how testing will be different, and the steps MBUSD and Meadows are taking to implement this exciting change.  PTA meeting to follow.  We will also host bingo in music room 22 for the kids and the library will be open for evening hours of our book fair.  Definitely a night you do not want to miss!  See you there!

Also, please don't forget that the latest Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Book 8, "Hard Times" will be available TODAY after school from 2:00-3:00.  Please bring $15.21 in exact change or a check made payable to Book Safari.

 

Lastly, a fifth grader at Meadows, Abbey Allen, is a junior ambassador at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles.  CHLA has a program called "Literally Healing" that enables every patient and their siblings to receive a brand-new book to take home with them after their hospital stay.  Please visit this link to learn more about Literally Healing.  We will have a basket set up at the book fair if you are interested in donating a book to this group.

WOW! What an Amazing PTA Membership Drive!
  

Thank you, thank you, thank you Meadows parents, teachers and staff for stepping up and supporting our PTA at record-setting levels! We should all be so very proud of how we pulled together to make excellent education a priority and a reality for our kids! Stay tuned for the final numbers, which we'll send out in a Special Edition email next week, but for now--GIVE YOURSELVES A BIG HUGE PAT ON THE BACK!

Running Club Update

It was another great week Runners!  Thank you to all the students that donated candy for our troops in Afghanistan! We received 184 lbs of candy!!  Your donations and the team picture is going to brighten many service peoples' day!! Well done runners!
  
61 runners, ran 847 total laps last week!  We also have three more runners that reached the marathon milestone, give it up for Emilie Miner, Maddie Driscoll and Aidan James.  Our class with the highest percent participation last week and the recipients of the Mustang Trophy is Mrs. Pahl's 1st grade!! GO FIRST GRADERS!
  
THIS week:  There will be NO running club on Friday, it's the Mustang Trot.  Be sure to get your sponsors this week and we anticipate great results after all the running you have been doing!  Go get 'em!!

If you have any uncut pumpkins leftover from Halloween, please bring them into Mrs. Primm in the library.  If she gets enough, she has a little Thanksgiving project for some of the older classes she would like to do. THANKS!!

Winter Program - Save the Date!

 

Save the date!  Our winter program is scheduled on Wednesday, December 11th at Vistamar High School, so please mark your calendars.  Our theme is "Hip Hop Holiday" and it will be a show filled with high energy music and dancing.  We hope your child/ren will participate!  More information and signup forms will be in Tuesday folders next week.

Jamba Juice Jamba Juice will be coming to Meadows on 
Friday, November 8th, for our Ice Cream Friday! They will be bringing two flavors of 8 ounce smoothies for purchase! 20% of sales will go back to Meadows PTA!  See the flyer for more info.

It's easy to earn money for Meadows!  All you have to do is clip out Box Tops for Education! 

box tops for education The Box Tops are located on many of the products that you already buy.  When you see Box Tops, clip them out and return them to school. There is a large collection box in the front office and also in your child's classroom.  Every Box Top counts!  If we all get in the habit of clipping out the Box Tops, we could literally earn thousands of dollars for our school! 2013 Reflections Art Contest - Due This Friday!

Join the Meadows 6-Man Beach Volleyball Team 

Attention Meadows Parent and Teacher
Volleyball Players. Meadows needs YOU for their 6-man Beach Volleyball Team for the MBX Beach Tournament to be held on Saturday, November 9 in Hermosa Beach. This fun tournament's purpose is to raise money for MBUSD Athletic teams. There is a suggested donation of $200 for each parent participant (teachers are free).  But if you are unable to give that amount, please join us anyway!  Please contact Erika Stevens at erikastevensmb@gmail.com or Greg Vena/Jim Walsh about being on the respective Women's or Men's team. You don't have to be a great volleyball player; just come out and have a great time with your fellow Meadows parents and teachers!  Please see the flyer for more information.  Go Mustangs!

COME SEE MIRA COSTA'S PRODUCTION OF THE CRUCIBLE

The Crucible is a captivating play that dramatizes the Salem Witch Trials of the 17th Century.  It centers around a series of hearings that lead up to the prosecution of people accused of witchcraft in Massachusetts.  It also demonstrates the consequences that can occur when people go off on an superstitious tangent.

 

Come see the talented MCHS Drama Department perform this play!
