Hi Mustangs! Take a minute or two to see what's going on at Meadows.

If you have trouble viewing this email, read online at www.meadowsschool.org
PTA General Meeting - Today!
Don't forget about the PTA General Meeting today!  Come grab a cup of coffee and a breakfast treat and hear all about what is going on at Meadows.  And find out how YOU can get involved!  See you TODAY at 8:15am in the Meadows Cafeteria!!

WHEN LOWER NUMBERS MATTER

Thanks to parent donations to MBEF, elementary classes in grades K-3 average just 24 kids. Compare that to most California schools. Some have as many as 45. Please ensure small classes next year by giving to the Annual Appeal. Take advantage of monthly installments.Mbef.org/Givetoday

Family Portraits - It's not too late!
Don't pass up the opportunity to have the photo of a lifetime!  There are still many appointments available to get your family portrait taken on the beach or at the park.  For $45 you can have a fabulous photo taken by a professional photographer (8x10 included in price).  A portion of your sitting fee and portrait order goes to our PTA.  Call JW Photography at 310-640-7212 and book your appointment (last appointment day is 11/10). For any questions you can email JJCorr1@yahoo.com.  Fliers are avilable in the Meadows office.

Mustang Trot Volunteers Needed

The Mustang Trot is one of our biggest annual fundraisers and many volunteers are needed to make it a success.  In addition to lots of hands on the day of the event, there is a lot of behind the scenes help needed.  If you can help, please respond ASAP, accept our thanks in advance and know someone will be in touch with details.

Mustang Trot LABEL Mania

With a detailed spreadsheet and a mail merge, you will create and print a water bottle label for each student - roughly 400 labels.   We have a form already built or you can create a new one.  One person needed.

Data, Data, Data...

Two weeks before the Trot we remind students how many laps they ran last year.  We need someone to mail merge the data onto a card.  One person needed.

On the day of the trot, we need 5 people - preferable one per grade - to tally the lap cards, match them to pledge cards and prepare a "Pony Up" note to send home regarding payment.   These five will also manage the data entry and payment entry (includes reconciling with the online transactions and making deposits of checks received).  Not much time is involved but it can be spread over a few weeks.  Five people needed.

Raffle Prizes for the Trot

Armed with a budget of roughly $100 and some bargain shopping skills, you will secure sports and health-related items for our event raffle.   We already have some freebies for the winner bags.  Last year we had basketballs, soccer balls, hula hoops, a boxing set, a snorkel...you get the idea.   We want to have roughly 30 raffled prizes to award and already have some Meadows gear, Round Table coupons and MB Frisbees.  We are also hoping to secure one BIG item to increase raffle participation.  Suggestions include a bike helmet or bike credit from Helen's cycles, or skateboard from Beckers.  (Note: Sports Authority no longer has stock to donate to local causes and they gave us a lot last year.)  One-two people needed

Top Fundraiser Lunch

Once the top fundraisers for each grade are identified, we need a team to plan a lunch for them with Connie Harrington.  Responsibilities include:

  • Schedule the date with Barbara in the office.
  • Email the parents of the Top Fundraisers inviting them and a friend to lunch with the principal
  • Order lunch (last year, we served pizza, fruit and water)
  • Email or put a letter in the teachers' boxes to tell them whom to send to the office for the lunch.
  • Attend lunch and be amazed at the lovely manners the children have in Connie's office!

One-two people needed

Top Lap Runner Movie Night

Once the top lap runners are identified, select a date to host the Movie Night in the cafeteria.  Responsibilities include:

  • Schedule the date with Barbara in the office.
  • Email the parents of the Top Lap Runners and children of volunteers inviting them to movie night
  • Purchase snacks (dinner is not provided; only movie-related snacks)
  • Secure lap top and screen (Erin DeBaets provided last year) and conduct other event set up
  • Supervise event
  • Clean up

One-two people needed

It's easy to earn money for Meadows!  All you have to do is clip out Box Tops for Education!

box tops for education The Box Tops are located on many of the products that you already buy.  When you see Box Tops, clip them out and return them to school. There is a large collection box in the front office and also in your child's classroom.  Every Box Top counts!  If we all get in the habit of clipping out the Box Tops, we could literally earn thousands of dollars for our school! If you have any questions, please call Teresa Hymowitz 310-990-7665

Rowell Drop Off Zone

As you may know from last year, we made some changes to our procedure for morning drop off in the Rowell drop off area. We have consulted with the Manhattan Beach Police Department and also checked what is working well at the other elementary schools. We are confident that the new plan will make the drop off zone safer, all we need now is your help to make it happen! Each class has been assigned one or two weeks over the remaining weeks of the year. We need two parents each day to volunteer and take a shift (7:45 - 8:15) during the assigned week for your class.

The link to sign up is http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0448AEAD22A02-rowell3 - Password meadows. Click on the link and find the assigned week for your class, then choose the morning that works best for your schedule. The procedure and rules are listed on the sign up genius site.

Thank you for your support and for your help to make the Meadows drop off zone safer for all!

Educational Opportunity for Parents of 4th and 5th Graders

For this event, we have partnered with Diana Lipson-Burge, Registered Dietician. Diana is a local dietician and is the founder of The Energy Resource and co-author of the book, Un-Dieting, Undoing the Diet Mentality and Staying Fit Forever. Diana is recognized in Southern California as a leading expert in weight management, disordered eating and sports nutrition. In addition to being a local expert and dynamic speaker, Diana is also a parent of 2 children within the Manhattan Beach Schools.

Come join us on Wednesday, October 16th at 7:00 p.m. in the MBMS multi-purpose room to learn how to start the school year right. Diana will present how to "Avoid The 5 Most Common Mistakes Well-Intended Parents Make Regarding Their Family's Nutrition". If you have ever wondered how to support your sons and daughters (or yourself) with self-esteem and self-image, focus and concentration during school and homework time, internal motivation to eat mindfully and be active in addition to ways to enhance endurance and strength in sports, this presentation is for you.
