Earth Day April 22 

 

On April 22, join the 6 million plus Canadians taking part in Earth Day events and projects to address local environmental issues. Here are some ideas to get you started!

Enter the 2nd Annual Take Me Outside Student Video Contest   

  • Do you go to school in Canada?
  • Are you in a K-12 class?
  • Does your class explore and find adventures outside of the classroom?
 Prove it! Create a short video to let us know how your class explores and finds adventures beyond the schoolyard fence. Then submit your video for a chance to win an all-expense paid trip to Banff as well as some great prizes from Mountain Equipment Co-op - tents, sleeping bags, and packs! If your video is chosen as a finalist, you could have it screened at the 2014 Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival, alongside some of the best mountain, adventure and exploration films in the world!

Create and Grow an Edible Schoolyard - Workshop in Edmonton 

 
April 10, 2014 from 7-9 pm at Holyrood School, 7920-94 Ave, Edmonton

The workshop will cover best practices and the steps for creating an edible schoolyard or a food garden and how to receive funding from Evergreen.  Step outside and look at Holyrood's naturescape, and discuss examples and photos from other schools.

Are you transforming your community in Calgary through an environmental initiative? Submit your project by April 30 for a chance to win up to $1,000 of funding from the Jack Leslie Youth Environmental Grant program.

Highway Wilding - Speak Up!   

    

Highway Wilding is a documentary for teachers, non-profits, transportation planners, and people like you who are interested in getting wildlife across highways safely. If you haven't seen the film yet, view it here

Miistakis Institute would like to catalyze the conversation about how we can all work together to protect the lives of wildlife and people in Canada, the USA and beyond by designing and building highways with both wildlife and people in mind. They are asking you to record a video clip. Learn more here. 
 
Kids: Tell your YYC Flood Story

  

Calgarians 12 and under are invited to submit a 2013 flood related drawing or photo by Friday, April 4. It can be a photo you took last year or a drawing you make today.

 

All artwork will be unveiled by Mayor Naheed Nenshi in the Municipal Building on June 20th and displayed at various locations throughout the city and online. Click here to learn more

 

Calgary to Participate in Largest Student Earth Week Film Program

 

PLANET IN FOCUS (PIF) is Canada's oldest environmental film festival. This year PIF will be hosting the largest Earth Week film program in Canada for 10,000 students in eleven Cineplex cinemas coast to coast on April 24, 2014!
