Taking Another Look At the Junco

At this time of year, different forms of Dark-eyed Juncos return to the eastern United States and to lower elevations in western Canada for the winter.

This informative video, Ordinary, Extraordinary Junco, was created with high-school and college science standards in mind, but it was also produced in hopes that it might educate and inspire citizens and students of all ages and backgrounds to appreciate science, field research, birds, and natural resources.

Beaver Conservation Project Needs Your Support!

The Miistakis Institute, the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area (ASCCA), Connect Charter School and Cows and Fish have collaborated to reintroduce beavers to the Pine Creek watershed; create a monitoring program to track the restoration of this sensitive natural area, and involve students in measuring these changes on the landscape to demonstrate the value of beavers as a watershed stewardship strategy.

This is a fantastic project involving students as citizen scientists, and it has made it to the final round of the SHELL - FUELLING CHANGE funding challenge. This initiative needs your votes to keep the momentum going!

Environmental Concerns Around the SW Calgary Ring Road

The recent announcement that the SW Calgary Ring Road will cut through a portion of the Weaselhead/Glenmore Natural Area will have significant impact on this highly used urban park. Noise, light, biodiversity loss, altered hydrology of the Elbow River and other impacts of a major freeway running along this natural area are of concern to recreational users and students utilizing the park.

The Weaselhead/Glenmore Park Preservation Society is urging Calgarians to learn more about the implications of the SWCRR.
