ACEE has offered the Cenovus Energy Environmental Education Leadership Clinic for the past five years and a variety of groups have participated including municipalities, government, schools, non-profits and school districts. We are fortunate to be offering the clinic for the next three years thanks to continued support from Cenovus Energy.

There is no other program like this in Alberta, it is a unique leadership and program development opportunity and we want to make sure it is of value to YOU!

The Global, Environmental and Outdoor Education Council are hosting a conference at the University of Alberta January 31-February 2. 

The conference will explore global and social justice issues in Alberta classrooms. It is being held in conjunction with International Week at the University of Alberta.

Summer Teacher Training - fully funded          

The Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society invites applications from Canadian teachers (K-12) to attend weather and oceanography education workshops in July 2013.

Specifically designed for teachers, these two-week workshops use current science, real-world techniques, and expert instructors; teachers are provided with a wealth of classroom-ready ideas and plans.

There are two programs teachers can apply for: 
  • Project Atmosphere is an atmospheric science workshop held at the National Weather Service Training Center in Kansas City, Missouri from July 14 to 26, 2013. The deadline for applications for Project Atmosphere is March 15, 2013. Click here to apply. 
  • The Maury Project is a physical oceanography workshop held at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland from July 7 to 19, 2013. The deadline for applications for the Maury Project is March 8, 2013.  Click here to apply. 
 

Experiential Education Conference February 6-8        

The Palisades Stewardship Education Centre is hosting a conference February 6-8th at their facility in Jasper. Some of the sessions include:
  • Outdoor Council of Canada Certification
  • Team Building and Initiative Tasks

Staples, in collaboration with Earth Day Canada, is running a contest that will be giving away 10 computer labs for schools, a value of $25,000 each. Submit an essay highlighting the environmental projects at your school and you could win. Read more information here.
 
Alberta Tomorrow is an educational tool that helps you to understand the process of sustainable planning, to balance land-uses such as agriculture, oil and gas and forestry with ecological integrity.

New study areas have been added to this tool and they include: Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Red Deer, and Rocky Mountains.

Graduate Program - Education for the Environment and Outdoor Education    

The MEd Interdiscplinary program at the University of Calgary is offered two programs for teachers with an interest in environmental education. You do not need a BEd to apply to these programs.
  • Education for the Environment - This program of study is designed for educators who wish to build experiential and foundational depth in environmental education by developing new understanding, caring and concern for the ways human beings are connected to and impact the natural world.
  • Outdoor Education -  This program aims to provide professionals (in practice fields such as education, kinesiology, recreation, environmental programs, outdoor organizations, etc) with the necessary knowledge, skills and experiences for them to initiate and develop Outdoor Programs successfully in their respective settings. 

Application deadline for both programs is March 15 with the program beginning Summer of 2013. 

 

Winter Fun and Learning       

So many events happen in the warmer months of the year! Here are two events that celebrate winter:
  • Avalanche Awareness Day - January 20 at the Burstall Pass Trailhead in Kananaski Country. There will be guided snowshoe hikes, hotdogs, winter survival skills, avalanche transceiver clinic and more.  
  • Winter Walk Day - February 6. Every winter thousands of Albertans celebrate Winter and walking by participating in Winter Walk Day in February. Register your group on-line and get outside for a walk! 
 

Green Teacher Webinars   

Green Teacher is a quarterly magazine offering perspectives on the role of education in creating a sustainable future, practical articles and ready to use activities for various age levels, and reviews of dozens of new educational resources.

They are also offering a great series of webinars tapping into experts from around the world. Here are the upcoming sessions:
