5 Steps to Designing a Training Environment That Gets Results

How many times have you spent time and money on a training program that under-delivered? The problem usually isn't the facilitator, the learners, the topic or the material. The problem is usually due to the learning environment prior to, during and following the training event.  What it boils down to is a very simple equation:

                         Training + Environment = Results

You can offer tons of training but if the environment doesn't support assimilation and application, you won't see results. Listed here are 5 integral steps that ensures you design a training environment that has an impact and gets results.

Step 1: ASSESS
How is the training topic going to address an opportunity or problem? What should be happening differently as a result of the training? How will you know the learning has made a difference ~ what will change? Are there examples of a best practice in this area? These questions should be always be asked before any training is designed. I like to involve leaders, managers, and learners in answering these questions. Not only does it help to develop the training content and objectives but it is important in getting buy in and support for the training.

Step 2: INVOLVE
Managers are a HUGE component of making training stick. I can confidently say that if they are not involved in setting expectations about the training, participating during the event, and following up after the training, you may not see the results you are hoping for. Involve them early, ask them to talk about the upcoming training in their staff meetings. Encourage them to talk about the skills/behaviors learned following the event. Provide managers with a way to recognize employees who are making positive changes as a result of their learning.

Step 3: PREPARE
Provide learners with an outline and learning objectives a day or two before the training. Interest them in the learning by sending out a few questions to consider and ask them to bring this information to discuss in the workshop. Set expectations about what they are going to learn and how they might apply the learning content. This engages learners early and gets them interested in their learning event.

Step 4: ENGAGE
Find the right facilitator that will engage your group. Consider your demographics and who they might connect with. Use a variety of learning methods to engage learners. Perhaps there is online pre-work that has to be completed. Use a coaching call as a follow up tool after the training. Pair up learners with accountability partners that meet during and following the training event.

Step 5: REGROUP
This is a very important component of making learning effective. The manager or facilitator follows up with the learners following the learning event. This can be done one on one, in a staff meeting, over the phone, or in a lunch and learn format. This provides an opportunity to provide feedback and/or recognition on what has
been working and how to remove any obstacles that are getting in th
e way of applying what they have learned.

These 5 steps are best practices when it comes to designing an engaging and powerful learning environment. They work and they take work but if done consistently will provide you with the ROI that you are looking for.

It's been a pleasure serving you on the ATD Board for the past 4 years. Thank you for being part of our community.

President's Message   presmessage2

Dear Members,
Happy Holidays! The end of the year has arrived and as I look back on the last twelve (12) months, I am proud of the year we've had and the successes we have achieved.
We have had an outstanding year of programs with well-known and respected nationally recognized ATD speakers and local experts with a wide range of topics, ranging from team engagement, performance consulting, panel discussions, e-Learning, and facilitation skills. We have an excellent attendance rate of twenty-nine (29) people per month which includes both members and non-members. Besides our monthly programs, this year we saw growth in our virtual programs as well. On average, our virtual programs have twenty (20) participants in attendance on topics ranging from persuasive communication, change management, and trends in e-Learning technology. For the second year in a row, we had an outstanding turnout at our Mix and Mingle event that we co-sponsor with the International Coaching Federation and the National Speakers Association.
This year we have pushed to increase our social media presence and better the look and feel of our web site. In fact, our web site is now mobile friendly! We continue to communicate with our members and non-members via social media outlets. If you haven't liked us or connected with us yet on LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter, we hope that you will do so soon!
We continue to be very healthy in our membership and financially. We have consistently added new members this year and are preparing for the influx of new members next year with the International Conference and Exposition (ICE) being hosted in Denver. Financially, we are in excellent shape and have enough money to cover expenses for the coming year.
This year, the Rocky Mountain Chapter was honored with three (3) Sharing our Success (SOS) awards. The purpose of this award is to share our best practices with other chapters to improve chapter services and management. Our first SOS award was submitted in late 2014 and awarded in 2015 for the strategic approach and partnership we took to find our VP of Finance. Our second SOS awarded was for the approach and achievement of the rebranding we completed. Our most recent SOS awarded was for our sustainable CPLP Virtual Study Group. Within the last two years, Rocky Mountain Chapter has exploded into an award winning chapter and we plan to continue this legacy next year and beyond.
The success that Rocky Mountain Chapter has experienced is largely in part to our committed board members and all the hard work that they put into their leadership roles. Our volunteers are an integral part to executing our monthly events and deserve tremendous recognition. We also say thank you to the many speakers who have volunteered their time to share their passion and knowledge with our members. Of course, our chapter would not exist if it were not for our members. We are more than two hundred members strong and your commitment, feedback, and passion for our industry keeps us going as a successful ATD chapter.
After my three (3) years of board member experience, I feel truly honored to see the growth of the chapter and watch us meet our potential. I am honored that I was elected to lead your chapter this year. As I pass the torch to your next president, Robin Doss, I am confident that with her leadership and the amazing board that is in place for 2016, the success we've had thus far is only the tip of the ice berg.
Cheers and happy holidays to you and your family.
Very Truly Yours,
Michele Padilla
2015 President

Our ATD RMC chapter recently was awarded an SOS (Sharing Our Success) for Creating a Sustainable CPLP Virtual Study Group! Congratulations to the ATD RMC Board for working hard to win this award!

"On behalf of the Chapter Recognition Committee, I want to congratulate you, and your chapters on your achievement. The "Creating a Sustainable CPLP Virtual Study Group" submission has been approved for recognition. SocialLearningPlatformAre You Interested in Piloting ATD-RMC's Exciting New Social Learning Platform?

ATD-RMC is piloting a Social Learning platform - an online member-based social media-esque space for connecting and collaborative learning!

Members register with what they are interested in learning or advising about and create interest-based groups or mentoring pairs where participants can ask questions, share ideas, videos, articles, content, and work products, and get feedback.

You don't have to be an expert; all you need is a desire to connect and learn with others. We're hoping this pilot will prepare us to roll this program out to the larger membership in early 2016 in order to create more opportunities to focus on your interests, create connections, and increase participation for our members in between chapter meetings.
