Employee Recognition: The Untapped Resource

"Just as the accumulation of small improvements can make a dramatic, lasting change in the organization's products or services, the repeated, numerous small occasions of taking note of the contributions of individuals and teams of individuals can create a different company."
Patrick Townsend and Joan Gebhardt

When deciding on your goals for the upcoming year, be sure to add improving company-wide recognition to the list. Recognition is a powerful resource that if used appropriately and consistently can empower, motivate, and inspire individuals to perform their best and exceed expectations.

The impact of recognition in the workplace is well known by those savvy companies who have made it part of their culture and are enjoying improved teamwork, morale, and goal attainment as a result. These companies have not only created a motivating environment that values contribution, creativity, and hard work; they have also made sure that all employees are involved in the recognition process. What steps you decide to take to improve your company-wide recognition should depend on your company goals, objectives, budget and culture.

Guidelines for implementing or improving your recognition program are as follows:
  • Define how a recognition program will reflect the values, goals and growth strategy of your company. In other words, determine what you want to accomplish by utilizing a recognition strategy.
  • Understand the variety of opportunities that are available for a recognition program and determine how you will use them.
    • Formal, structured and planned rewards vs. informal, unstructured and spontaneous recognition
    • Employee to employee recognition
    • Team recognition
    • Departmental recognition
    • Top performer recognition
    • Company-wide recognition
  • Make sure that the criterion for giving and receiving recognition is clear and understood by everyone.
  • Have a budget for recognition and rewards.
  • Be clear on how you will measure the impact of any recognition plan or program that you put in place.
  • Develop a strategy to communicate the recognition program and ensure that all employees are involved in the recognition process.
  • Periodically do a pulse check with your employees to see if the recognition program you have in place is still getting people jazzed.
These simple guidelines can help determine how you might improve the recognition or reward processes that you already have in place, as well as give you a solid foundation if you are beginning a formal recognition program.

Expect great things!

Dear Members,
Life throws you curve balls and you aren't prepared for those balls. We have our professional lives that keep us busy, our family lives, plus all of our extracurricular activities. Most of the time it is hard to keep our heads above water, but somehow we manage.
Since we are in the 4th quarter of 2015, budgets are being evaluated, projects are being tied up for the year, and we are preparing families for the holidays; the end of the year is definitely upon us. So, how do we push through to the end?
We must take steps to be more productive and to rise above all the noise in all facets of our lives.
Here are a few simple steps you can take:
  • Don't just set your goals, rather create a process that sets you on a path to achieve your goals. Just as you need a map to get from point A to point B, you need a map to get you to your goals.
  • Say "no." For so many of us, this is one the hardest things to do, but you can say no and celebrate that decision. It's a way to keep from spreading yourself too thin and it feels so good! It is okay to say no. Now, repeat that five times!
  • Take short, frequent breaks. This is almost like saying no. It's hard to do because time spent not working is wasted, non-productive time, right? Wrong. Taking short breaks helps to de-clutter your mind and refocus on the task at hand. Use the alarm on your phone to time your break to just 5 minutes and then, get back to work.
  • Take a midday siesta! If you are one the lucky people who works at a company that supports productivity napping or you can work from home, take a short nap. Nap after lunch for 20-45 minutes and of course, set your alarm. The key is to get to the deep sleep stage and awake feeling energized and like you can conquer the world.
  • Your mind is full enough already, don't struggle to remember your "to do list." Write down your list of things to-do and strike a line through them after you have accomplished them. It feels so good to complete tasks!
I hope the few tips that are provided will help you catch life's curve balls because they come at you fast and furious.
We look forward to seeing you on November 10th to Enhance Your Training and Facilitation Skills.

2015 President
SocialLearningPlatformAre You Interested in Piloting ATD-RMC's Exciting New Social Learning Platform?

ATD-RMC is piloting a Social Learning platform - an online member-based social media-esque space for connecting and collaborative learning!

Members register with what they are interested in learning or advising about and create interest-based groups or mentoring pairs where participants can ask questions, share ideas, videos, articles, content, and work products, and get feedback.

You don't have to be an expert; all you need is a desire to connect and learn with others. We're hoping this pilot will prepare us to roll this program out to the larger membership in early 2016 in order to create more opportunities to focus on your interests, create connections, and increase participation for our members in between chapter meetings.
